Partial Pressures

Postby Emily Vainberg 1D » Sun Jan 12, 2020 1:47 pm

Dr. lavelle said that for total partial pressures you add all the partial pressures together.
Do you ever use this value for ICE tables. I'm a bit confused when you would use this value.

You can use partial pressures for ICE tables if you are given them and Kp. We also use partial pressures in the ideal gas equation and in calculation Kp.

For total partial pressures, they are normally calculated when factoring in all of the different contributions to the pressure of the gas and only then is the total used in the ICE table for equilibrium.

What are partial pressures?

If you have a mixture of gases in a container, the partial pressure would be the pressure each individual gas exerts on the container. The partial pressures added together equals the total pressure of the mixture.
