weak acids and weak bases

How do you perform calculations with weak acids and weak bases?

Re: weak acids and weak bases

You will want to try and idenitfy ka or kb depending on whether the substance is a acid or base. ka is calculated the same way that kc or kp would be calculated, ([P]/[R] excluding liquids or solids). And there are a few important equations associated with ka and kb.

- (ka)(kb) = 1.0 x 10^-14
- pka + pkb = 14
- pka = -log (ka)
- pkb = -log (kb)

I'm not exactly sure what kind of calculations you are talking about You would have to use an ICE chart, with Ka and Kb. The problem would most likely ask for the pH/pOH and the concentrations of H3O+/OH-.

I am saying that the function for giving ka is set up the same way as kc or kp. However, you are correct in that you need to set up an ICE chart to be able to represent the function for ka as a quadratic function solving for x.
