### Inert Gas

How can we tell what an inert gas is? Are they just simply another term for noble gases?

### Re: Inert Gas

inert gas is another term used for noble gas as these gases do not undergo chemical reactions under a set of given conditions (=unreactive)

### Re: Inert Gas

Yeah, noble and inert gases are both terms used to describe the last column of the periodic table

### Re: Inert Gas

If you are asking it in term of a question, they would have to tell you that a change in pressure was caused by an inert gas or maybe by a change in volume. Saying that pressure changed(increased/decreased) is not enough to tell whether the equilibrium shifted. They would have to say that it was due to an inert gas or etc. If it is an inert gas we know that the equilibrium will not shift because since it is a noble gas it will not affect the reaction.

inert gasses and noble gasses are the same.

Inert gases don't react with any of the reactants or products.

### Re: Inert Gas

An inert gas does not react. Noble gases are the elements of the rightmost column of the periodic table. Noble gases are part of inert gases, but they are not used interchangeably.

### Re: Inert Gas

An inert gas is on both sides of the chemical equation because it is not involved in the reaction. An inert gas can change the pressure of the system though.

### Re: Inert Gas

inert and noble gases are the same thing. They are in the very last column of the periodic table and are not reactive and very stable.

### Re: Inert Gas

For problems, inert gases will not show up in the equation (thus adding it will not shift equilibrium).

Inert gases are gases that don't react with any of the reactants or products. Noble gases are often used because they are notoriously unreactive.

### Re: Inert Gas

Inert gases won't cause any change in the chemical equilibrium (equilibrium constant) since they are unreactive.

### Re: Inert Gas

Inert gases are just another term for noble gases. They are inert because they don't react with anything due to their full valence shells. In regards to class material, they say that when noble gases are added to a reaction, they don't shift the equilibrium because all they do is increase the overall pressure, but not the individual partial pressures of the reaction gases. Therefore, the values that go into the equilibrium equation does not change and nothing about the reaction really changes.
