How do you know which direction the reaction will go based off of K and Q values?

If Q is smaller than K, then equilibrium will shift towards the right so that it makes more products and Q will equal K. If Q is larger than K, then the reaction will shift towards the reactants so that more reactants can be made in order to reach equilibrium.

Q and K are both calculated by doing products over reactants. Therefore, If Q is greater than K, this means there are more products than there should be at equilibrium, so the reactant shifts left, to form more reactants. If Q is less than K, this means that there are more reactants than there would be at equilibrium, so the reaction shifts right to produce more products.

If Q is less than K, that means that the ratio of products to reactants is lower than at equilibrium, so the reaction will favor the products. If the Q is greater than K, then the ratio of products to reactants is higher than at equilibrium, so the reaction will favor the reactants.

When Q is greater than K, the reaction will shift to the left. When Q is lower than K, the reaction will shift to the right.

When Q < K, the forward reaction is favored.
When Q> K, the reverse reaction is favored.
Create a number line if you cannot remember this. if Q is to the left of K then it goes to the right towards K and if Q is to the right of K you go left towards K.
