closed vs isolated

Can someone explain the difference between a closed and isolated system?

Closed means that energy can exchange with the surroundings. It will be sealed but not completely... Isolate means completely sealed, so nothing can exchange with the surroundings (ex. bomb calorimeter). Isolated is even more "protected" from transfer into the surroundings if you will.

Closed can not interact with the environment at all. Isolated can interact slightly.

A closed system can transfer energy (heat or work) but not matter with its surroundings.

An isolated system cannot transfer energy or matter with its surroundings.

Heat can be transferred with the surroundings in a closed system but matter cannot. Neither can be transferred with the surroundings in an isolated system.

An example of a closed system would be and ice pack used to reduce swelling on injuries (energy can be transferred in and out of the system) and an example of an isolated system would be a thermos with hot liquid in it (no heat/energy/matter can go in and out of the system into the surroundings).

Closed allows only energy transfer while isolated does not allow the transfer of energy nor matter.

The main difference is that heat exchange can still occur in a closed system but not in an isolated system.

In an isolated system, no exchange of any kind can happen between the system and the surroundings, while in a closed system, energy can be exchanged between the system and the surroundings. The examples given in class were the bomb calorimeter being a isolated system while a sealed beaker is a closed system.

In an isolated system, there can be in interaction between the system and its surroundings. In a closed system, there can be interaction with the surroundings.

A closed system can exchange energy with its environment, but an isolated system cannot.

Isolated systems are completely sealed and closed off. Imagine a test tube with a lid on it, then wrapped completely in a "puff jacket" as Dr. Lavelle said in his in class example from a few weeks ago. It does not interact with its environment at all.

A closed system is when a system can only transfer energy (like heat) with its surroundings, meanwhile an isolated system can't transfer anything with its surroundings.

Isolated systems do not interact with the environment around it. A closed system can transfer energy.
