Reversible vs Irriversible
Can anyone explain what makes an expansion reversible versus irreversible?

An Irreversible reaction occurs when the external pressure of the surroundings and temperature remain constant and the volume of the system is changed, therefore changing the internal pressure of the system. In the case of irreversible reactions, there is no equilibrium possibility and the equation used is -Petx∆V. On the other hand, a reversible expansion occurs when temperature remains constant and the system and surroundings are allowed to reach equilibrium. You use the equation -nRTln(v2/v1) for work.

A good tell for for reversible and irreversible is that irreversible reactions occur under constant pressure

If it happens slowly, tiny steps at a time, it is reversible. If it happens very quickly, and some of the energy is lost, it is irreversible.
