On the learning outcomes sheet for "Thermochemistry and the First Law of Thermodynamics" from Dr. Lavelle's class website, it says we should
"understand the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels, and the use of alternative fuels as energy sources." Can someone explain how this relates to what we learned in class regarding these topics?

Re: Learning outcome fossil fuels
I think part of it is understanding that burning fuel is an open system, meaning that both mass and heat are exchanged in the process. Other than that, it probably means to understand how to calculate heat, internal energy change, and other things we learned in class using the chemical equation for burning fossil fuels.

Hi Sydney,
I was wondering the same thing. From what I understand, we don't have to memorize too much on this topic. My main takeaway was that we should I know how to apply thermochemistry to calculate the efficiency of fossil fuels, as opposed to other energy sources. We should also know offhand that fossil fuels are not very efficient when compared to alternative sources. Also, burning fossil fuels involves a combustion reaction. I found a source that explains this topic in more detail: https://chem.libretexts.org/Courses/Pri ... ssil_Fuels Overall, I don't think we have to memorize too many specific facts, but we should be able to apply our knowledge of thermodynamics/chemistry to analyze the efficiency of different energy sources. I hope this helps!
