Le Chatelier's Principle

Postby Kaylee Clarke 1G » Sun Feb 09, 2020 8:55 pm

when you are expanding a gaseous mixture, what is an indication of which side of the reaction is favored? What is the role of the amount of moles in the reactant and product side?

When you increase the volume, which decreases the pressure of the gas molecules and changes the concentration of the gas molecules, the reaction will shift to the side with more moles of gas.

If expanding, volume is increasing and pressure is decreasing. It will favor the side of the reaction with more moles

Lavelle taught a shortcut in class that
If volume is decreasing, shift towards the side of the reaction with less moles. So your question is just that in reverse.

I think it is important to note that this only applies to gases too

When you are expanding a gaseous mixture, you are increasing the volume, so decreasing the pressure, so the reaction would proceed to the side with more moles of gas.

It is important to understand that this shift is due to a change in the concentration affecting the moles as when the volume is compressed, the concentrations will increase (C=n/v)

Increasing pressure and decreasing volume increases concentration on the side with a greater amount of moles.
