A closed system is when the energy of the system can exchange with the surroundings, but it is closed so the matter can not (an example of this is a thermometer). An isolated system is when neither energy or matter can exchange with its surroundings(an example of this is a bomb calorimeter).

Isolated systems do not exchange matter or energy with its surroundings (where closed systems can only exchange energy). The universe is said to be the ultimate isolated system because it can't really exchange anything with its "surroundings" (it has no surroundings)
a closed system can transfer energy to the surroundings but not matter. an isolated system can not transfer energy or matter to the surroundings. an example of a closed system would be an ice pack. an example of an isolated system would be a thermos.

A closed system can exchange energy with its surroundings but not matter, while an isolated system can’t exchange matter or energy with its surroundings. An example of an isolated system would be a thermos (insulated, neither matter nor energy can be exchanged) and an example of a closed system could be a capped water bottle (matter can’t be exchanged but heat can)
