degeneracy W

what does the n subscript represent in degeneracy? I have seen it as Avogadro's number or as the amount of moles..

Na is going to be Avogadro's number whereas lowercase n is going to be the number of moles.

When do we use Avogadro's number instead of moles?

Na stands for the number of atoms, or if you’re dealing with molecules, molecules, hence the N and a. You use Avogadro’s number to find the number of atoms or molecules if given moles, because the equation to degeneracy W is the number of possible states to the power of the number of atoms.

So S=klnW, but how do you find W? I get that its the number of micro states, but how do we know the number of micro states? Is it based on if the molecule is linear or diatomic or nonlinear or is there another equation?

To find W, you can use the equation W=(P)^a
Where “P” is the number of possible positions and “a” is the number of atoms

Na is the number of atoms and it is found using avogadro's number.

Degeneracy is the number of states possible to the power of the number of particles. Thats why you can have avogadro's number if you are looking at the degeneracy of one mole.
