Delta G

Postby MaryBanh_2K » Fri Feb 14, 2020 12:39 am

Why do we solve for delta G of the reaction using the delta G with the degree sign? I know that the degree sign indicates that the reaction is at standard temperature and pressure but what is the significance of this?

The purpose of the degree sign is to indicate that the relationship between enthalpy, entropy, and temperature in regards to spontaneity is deltaG = deltaH -T*deltaS only at standard conditions.

The Delta G with the degree sign is the one being calculated because this is under standard conditions for the reaction and correlates to a standard enthalpy and entropy and is calculated that way.

It means that it is under standard conditions. In calculating ΔG, if you wanted to calculate the standard form, you would have to use other values that are also in their standard form.

The degree sign indicates standard form.

The naught sign means that the conditions are under STP or standard temperature and pressure. If the delta G has the naught symbol then so does the delta S and H.

STP is 1 atm and 273.15K right ?
