Midterm Curve

Postby Ellis Song 4I » Thu Feb 13, 2020 3:48 pm

Does Lavelle curve his tests at all? Can we expect a curve for the midterm?

Going off what happened in 14A and in his syllabus, he does not curve the midterm but a 50% in the class is a C, so in that way he does curve the final grade to help those that are close to failing.

Yes, I don't believe individual exam scores are curved, but rather that the final grade boundaries are determined based on the overall performance of the class after the final.

I don't believe he curves the midterm or tests because of the overall class curve.

For 14A I think we got our exam back around a week and a half after the day of the midterm!

My TA said he will most likely curve the midterm because most people did very bad.

I'm not sure if there is an official "curve" but all you need is a 50% overall in the class to pass with a C

Lavelle doesn't adjust overall grades until the end of the quarter, so no there is no curve for any individulal test.

I hope he does make an exception and curve. The midterm had some unexpected questions :/

To pass the class with a C- you need 250 points. He does not curve individual tests, but he may adjust grades at the end of the quarter depending on the overall class grades.

I really hopes he curves the midterm because it was more difficult than expected. However, I wouldn't put too much hope in that because he also could easily not curve the midterm.

Yeah he usually doesn't curve the midterm even if the average is low.

I also hope he curves it although I doubt he will. On the bright side, half the class will get a C or higher in the final grade I think

Does this mean all other grades are curved too? Like how low does an A or an A- go? Or does it not apply for those?

he never curves actual tests, however he changes the grading scale for the final grades. for example, if you get 50% of all the possible points in the course, you pass the class with a C-, and based on how everyone did this quarter, he will adjust the grading scale accordingly.

He doesn't curve individual tests :( but the overall grade is adjusted at the end of the quarter. There's no hope til the end of the quarter :(((

Sadly, no curve for individual tests since there is a curve at the end of the quarter depending on how students do overall. To pass the class, you only need 50% of points.

From my experience with Lavelle last quarter, he does not curve the tests individually. However, he does curve the final grade of the class with 50% as a C-. This highly elevates your chances of passing the class.

The cutoffs for final grades are curved but we don't exactly know what the cutoffs are.

Tests themselves are not curved but the grade distribution is based on everyone FINAL grade.

Lavelle does not curve his tests but sometimes in the past he has adjusted the final grades.

The class is point based, so tests are not curved by themselves. The class as a whole is curved or adjusted. In order to pass the class, you must receive half of the available points.

I don't know if he does curves for midterms and tests but he might do adjustments at the end of the quarter.

Individual tests aren't curved but the class grade distribution will be at the end of the quarter if the pre-curve average falls short of what he wants for the final average.

Based on his syllabus and last quarter (14a), I don't think he curves to help a B+, A-, A student...I believe the "curve" he refers to on his syllabus is mostly for students in the C (getting a 50% to pass the class)...but I will say that the midterm was hard and I do hope things are different this quarter :/

He sent out an email saying that the midterms will be given out on Wednesday hopefully...

He doesn't curve the midterm but assigns grades at the end of the quarter depending on the overall class performance.

I have heard that if the midterm/final scores are exceptionally lower than normal, he usually adjusts the grades bit. For 14A the final average was very high thus no curve, but after this midterm there might be one.

One thing that will give you an idea as to whether the grades will be adjusted at the end of the quarter or not is the average of the midterm, which he will state in class on Wednesday. Last quarter the averages for the midterm and the final were in the mid 70's so he did not really adjust the grades. I have a feeling the average for this midterm will be way below that, so hopefully we are in luck :-)

I'm pretty sure he curved 14a at the end of last quarter, but I wouldn't expect him to do as much for 14b.

His syllabus says he does not curve, but I imagine there would only be a curve if a very low number of people pass on an exam.

He does not curve but they are super generous with points and your grade depends on points, not percentage.

He curves the class based on the total overall scores. Don't expect your midterm score to be curved but likely if everyones final class scores are lower then expected he will curve the class

I have been told that he does not curve the midterm, however, he does curve the class grading scale at the end of the quarter by just a little bit.
