Significance of Van't Hoff Equation

Postby JamieVu_2C » Sun Feb 16, 2020 11:05 pm

What is the significance of the Van't Hoff equation? It connects thermodynamics with the equilibrium constant, but is it supposed to tell us anything about a reaction?

I think the point was to relate K to the temperature? I might be wrong

I think it's the change in K and the change in temperature??

Regarding the reaction, the van’t Hoff equation is basically just telling us that an increase in temperature favors the formation of products if it’s an endothermic reaction, and it favors the formation of reactants if it’s exothermic. Page 433 of the textbook explains this more thoroughly!

The equation expresses the temperature dependence on the equilibrium constant K of a chemical reaction

the van't hoff equation (assuming that delta H and delta S are constant over all temperatures), calculates the equilibrium constant (K) at different temperatures.

Van't Hoff allows us to find K at different temperatures from Gibb's since K changes when the temperature does

The equation represents the relationship between the equilibrium constant and the thermodynamic properties enthalpy, temperature, and entropy. This means that we can observe how K changes based on a change in temperature, enthalpy, or entropy.

My TA said that something like this equation was just a way of mathematically showing that heating an endothermic reaction favors products vs heating an exothermic favors reactants
