ammonium nitrate dissolution

Postby 904475052_ » Mon Jan 04, 2016 9:30 pm

Can someone please explain how the dissolution of ammonium nitrate in water is endothermic? Thanks!

Dissolution means breaking apart or disintegration. Furthermore, a reaction is endothermic when bonds are broken using energy. Thus, ammonium nitrate dissolution would be endothermic.

I just wanted to add that how dissolving works is that it takes energy to break the bonds in the solute and energy is released when the solute ions are surrounded by the solvent to form a kind of a shell. For Ammonium Nitrate, it just so happens that more energy is required to break the bonds in the solute than is released by the formation of a water shell, resulting in an endothermic dissolution.
