Galvanic vs. Concentration Cells
What is the difference between Galvanic and Concentration cells and which is more important? Thanks!

Re: Galvanic vs. Concentration Cells
For concentration cells both sides have the same components, just different concentrations.

Re: Galvanic vs. Concentration Cells
Galvanic cells are also typically separated by a salt bridge whereas concentration cells are separated by a porous wall. In addition, the Ecell is typically lower voltage in concentration cell because the reaction is only driven by the difference in concentrations between the anode and cathode reactions as both compounds are of the same species, and Enot is always 0V.

Yeah I think the main difference is that concentration cells have only one element with differing concentrations on either side of the porous wall, while galvanic cells typically have more than one element (so half reactions are used for calculating). Both are important though.

Re: Galvanic vs. Concentration Cells
The difference is that galvanic cells are separated using a salt bridge which also means they will be shown as 2 lines (ll) when written out and Concentration cells are written out using 1 line (l). Both are very important esp in electro chemistry. Galvanic bridges also contain salt bridges in order to allow for ion transfers.

Re: Galvanic vs. Concentration Cells
A Galvanic Cell relies on different metal electrodes for the flow of electrons where as concentration cells rely on different concentrations of the same metal in the electrodes to drive the flow of electrons.

Re: Galvanic vs. Concentration Cells
Concentration cells have the same solution in each compartment, but they have different concentrations, hence the name. Galvanic cells have different metals in each compartment which transfer electrons from one solution to the other.
