Acidic and Basic solutions
Are redox reactions balanced differently when they're taking place in an acidic solution?

When they are in acidic solutions, you balance using H2O and H+
For basic solutions, you do the exact same process but at the very end you add OH- to both sides to neutralize the H+

The only difference is acidic solutions you at H+ with the waters and for basic solutions, you add OH-

The procedure is the same but the basic solution requires you to use OH- instead of H+

In acidic solutions, you balance redox reactions using H2O and H+. The hydronium ions produce the acidic solution.

YES! They are different. Here's what my TA said for the difference:
1. determine the oxidation and reduction half reactions.
2. Balance both half reactions:
a) Balance elements other than H or O
b) Balance O elements by adding H2O molecules to match the number of O molecules you have.
c) Balance H elements by adding H+ (aq) FOR BASES: add OH- molecules to cancel all H+ molecules which will become H2O and most likely cancel with H2Os on the other side of the reaction
d) Balance the overall charge on both sides by adding electrons to the more positive side.
e) Combine both of the balanced half rxns (make sure the # of electrons in the half rxns match before you do this). Cancel any electrons or molecules that appear on both sides.

When there is an acidic solution, you use H+ to balance out the hydrogen atoms. On the other hand, for a basic solution, you use OH- to balance out the hydrogen atoms.

for a basic solution you need to be sure to include the H2O and H+, but with acidic solutions you only add the H+

In an acidic solution, you can balance it using H2O and H+, while in a basic solution, you can balance it using H2O and OH-.

You use h2o and it's ions to balance the equations, but in acid you use H+, and in bases you use oh-
