Recharging Batteries

Postby Annalyn Diaz 1J » Fri Feb 22, 2019 10:30 am

Why is recharging a battery considered to be an unfavorable reaction?

I think it's because the battery is absorbing energy. A favorable reaction releases energy.

For batteries to be recharged, the reaction has to be reversed and electrical energy has to be supplied. Because we have to supply and input energy, this is not favorable.

In a favorable reaction, the system is doing work. By charging a battery, you are doing work to a system. While possible, it is just simply not ideal.

The potential of the reverse reaction is negative, therefore it is not spontaneous and will require a supply of energy to occur.

Charging a reaction is endergonic and thus not spontaneous.

Charging a battery requires supplying it with energy.

Remember that in a battery electrical energy --> chemical energy.

Exactly. For example, we supply energy to our phone battery by plugging it in.

A battery dying or being used is releasing energy and therefore favorable, so the reverse reaction (charging the battery) would not be favorable.

The favorable case would be if the battery was doing work and dying. Therefore the unfavorable action would be recharging it.
