Acidic and Basic Reactions
For reactions that occur in acidic or basic solutions, why do we have to add water or H+/OH- ions, and how do we know how much to add?

Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
You add them to balance out the hydrogen and oxygen atoms present in the interaction. For basic, you would add OH- and for acidic, you would add H+ ions.

Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
When balancing half reactions, H+ is added to balance H and OH- is added to balance O.

You add H+/OH- ions and H2O to balance out the hydrogens and oxygens in the half reactions. For acidic reactions you add the H+, and for basic reactions you add OH-.

Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
OH- and H+ are used to balance basic and acidic reactions in half reactions, respectively.

Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
Like what everyone was saying, you add H+/OH- to balance the number of hydrogen atoms present and the same for oxygen. You know how much to add by basing of the coefficients, similar to balancing chemical reactions back in Chem 14A. Hope that helps! :)

Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
H+ is added for balancing reactions in acidic solutions, and OH- is used for basic solutions. Just remember that in acidic solutions, only H+ is used for balancing H, while for basic solutions H2O is added to the side that needs H and add OH- to the other side of the reaction.
Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
You add H20 to balance the oxygens in both types of reaction. Use H+ to balance the hydrogens in an acidic solution and OH- to balance hydrogens in a basic solution.

H+ is used for balancing hydrogen atoms in acidic solutions and OH- is used to balance hydrogen in basic solutions. H2O is used to balance oxygen for both types of reactions.

Re: Acidic and Basic Reactions
H+ is added to balance H in acidic reactions while OH- is added in basic reactions to the opposite side of the reaction to balance the H20 molecule(s)
