platinum

In homework question 6L.5 part b, only one of the half reactions doesn't include a solid. However in the back of the book it says that both sides of the cell diagram include platinum and I was wondering why?

It's because the solid on the anode side is iodine which is not a metal. You need a solid metal to conduct electricity and thus allow for the movement of electrons

If the compounds in the redox reaction are in aqueous or gaseous form, they need a conductor to help with the movement of electrons from one cell to the other. Platinum Pt(s) is a common conductor that can be used.
