Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
Will we usually be told if the redox reaction we're asked to balance is either acidic or basic?

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
From what I've seen from the homework problems I think they have to tell us if the solution is in an acidic or basic environment.

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
the test specified for us if it will be basic or acidic, and I imagine that they'll advise us also on the final, because of the extra steps we have to calculate in basic solutions.

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
From what I have seen the problem will always tell us what kind of solution (basic or acidic) we are dealing with. There wouldn't really be a way to know which redox process otherwise so I would just worry about being able to know how to do the problems for the different solutions.

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
The question will usually specify acidic or basic solution. If no solution is specified assume acidic.

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
To add on, when balancing reactions in acidic solutions, you can use H2O to balance the oxygen molecules, and H3O+ to balance the hydrogen molecules. When balancing reactions in basic solutions, you would use H2O and OH- ions.

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
It should specify if it is Basic or Acidic. Acidic meaning balance with H+ and Basic meaning balance with OH-.

Re: Acidic and Basic Redox Reactions
Yes, every problem I've encountered where I've had to balance a redox reaction have specified whether or not the reaction occurs in a basic or acidic solution (to know if H+ or OH- are available when it comes time to balance hydrogen in the half reactions as described in Toolbox 6K.1 on page 538).

You must be told in order to know if you will have h plus or oh-
