Changing the mass of electrodes

Postby Tracy Tolentino_2E » Sun Mar 08, 2020 10:29 pm

In Test 2, there was a problem that asked me what happens to the E(cell) if the mass of the anode is halved. What does happen to E(cell) if you change the mass or concentration of the electrode?

Mass doesn't affect the E(cell) but concentration does.

I believe that nothing changes in the reaction. Equilibrium/rate is not affected because solid electrodes are not components of the expression for Q or K.

If the mass of the anode was halved, this would not affect the Ecell value, because the concentration would remain the same.

Changing the mass of the electrode does not change E(cell), but changing the concentrations of the reactants and products or the temperature of the reaction does change E(cell). You can see this by the variables that participate in the Nernst equation.

Changing the mass would not affect the Ecell because in the Nernst equation, which is used to calculate the Ecell, the mass is not incorporated into the equation.

When halved, the concentration would not be changed so the Ecell wouldn't be changed.
