HCl and NaOH producing dT

Postby WGaines_2E » Mon Mar 09, 2020 9:28 pm

Which of the following combinations of HCl and NaOH produce the largest dT?
a)50mL of 1M HCl and 50mL of 1M NaOH
b)50mL of 2M HCl and 50mL of 2M NaOH
c)100mL of 1M HCl and 50mL of 2M NaOH
d)100mL of 1M HCl and 100mL of 1M NaOH

is the answer b or c?

I think its B because while you have equal number of reactant molecules, the reaction will be taking place in less volume of solution, so any temperature change will be more pronounced.

I believe it would be B because there is a greater concentration of reactants colliding! Because there are more reactants colliding, more energy will be released and a larger dT will result. :)

The answer would be b. The amount of mols HCL and NaOH reacting would is the highest in this problem, as well as the lowest volume of liquid. Because there is less liquid in the beaker, the temperature difference would be higher.

since mols are the same for each, I looked at volume of soln. where the delta temp change is greatest in the smallest volume. I thought of the soln volume like an absorbant, so the more water there is, the less a rxn will be able to shift its temp as compared to a little volume of water
