Activation Energy vs Free Energy of Activation

Postby Jasmine 2C » Thu Mar 12, 2020 9:08 pm

This is from Outline 6: Understand the difference between activation energy and free energy of activation.
Can someone explain their differences?

The activation energy is the energy barrier or energy needed to process the reaction through.

Activation energy is specific to a reaction. molecules will need to overcome an energy threshold to undergo the reaction. Free energy of activation refers to how much energy is available to cause a reaction to take place.

Activation energy can change for the reaction but I think free energy stays the same regardless of whether the activation energy is lower or higher.

Free energy of activation has to do with Gibbs free energy. Activation energy is the energy that is needed to get over the energy barrier of each transition step.

The former refers to the energy barrier that needs to be surpassed in order for the reaction to occur (reaction specific) and the ladder means energy needed to cause a reaction for it to take place.

The activation energy is the amount of energy needed for the reaction to occur
