Galvanic vs Electrolytic cells
Can someone explain the difference between the two? I don't understand what an electrolytic cell is and how it could be different than a galvanic cell.

Re: Galvanic vs Electrolytic cells
An electrolytic cell converts electrical energy into chemical energy, while a galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy.

Re: Galvanic vs Electrolytic cells
A galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy, while an electrolytic cell converts electrical energy into chemical energy. In a galvanic cell, a spontaneous redox reaction (ΔG<0, energy is released) produces an electric current through an external circuit. However, in an electrolytic cell, a nonspontaneous redox reaction (ΔG>0, energy is needed) requires electrical energy to occur.
Re: Galvanic vs Electrolytic cells
In an electrolytic cell, the set up is similar to the galvanic cell. However, the anode is not directly connected to the cathode. Instead, it is connected to an external power supply that drives the reaction.

Re: Galvanic vs Electrolytic cells
A galvanic cell is essentially where chemical energy drives electrical energy, so in this case E is positive and the reaction is favored. In a electrolytic cell, E is negative, which means the reaction is not favored and an electric current must be supplied in order for it to happen. In this case, electric energy is used to create chemical energy.

What exactly would an electrolytic cell do? Is it not generating a voltage charge like a galvanic cell since the energy is turned into chemical?Kimberly Koo 2I wrote:An electrolytic cell converts electrical energy into chemical energy, while a galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electrical energy.

That link leads to an image which explains the differences of both cells on a diagram. Hope it helps :)
