Change from Graphite to Diamond

Postby Isa AbdulCader 3K » Mon Jan 11, 2016 2:27 pm

Why is it that graphite forming into diamond is an exothermic process? Are diamonds less stable than graphite despite being so structured? Thanks

Graphite forming into diamond is an exothermic process because more bonds are being formed. At standard conditions (25C and 1 atm), graphite is more stable, but at high temperatures and pressures, diamond is more stable.

The above discussion is correct. Well done!
