how can you tell if there is expansion?

Expansion will usually lead to an increase in volume (because the internal pressure is greater than the external pressure); likewise, compression will lead to a decrease in volume (because external pressure is greater than the internal pressure)

it is also important to know the difference between gradual expansion and sudden expansion, in which you would apply the appropriate formula. The questions I have seen typically state whether the process is occurring gradually or suddenly. Hope this helps!

Reversible expansion means that the expansion is gradual, while irreversible expansion means that the expansion is instantaneous.

Expansion can be determined if work is done by the system at a constant pressure, so we find that the system expanded against the external pressure.
