Re: Factors Affecting k
Yes, it can change if the temperature changes, that is the only way it can change

Re: Factors Affecting k
Yes, the rate constant can change. It can change due to temperature. The rate constant is related to temperature through the Arrhenius equation.

Re: Factors Affecting k
The rate constant k is similar to the equilibrium constant K in that it is only affected by a change in temperature.

Re: Factors Affecting k
Temperature can have an affect on the value of the equilibrium constant. This problem was also on the midterm i believe.

Re: Factors Affecting k
I believe we only go over temperature changing rate, however it can be changed by altering activation energy as well(adding or removing a catalyst)
It is related in the Arrhenius equation; k=Ae^(-Ea/RT)
I think we have to understand the concept of catalysts, but not necessarily how to compute an equation with them.

Re: Factors Affecting k
The rate constant of the equation can alter in two ways: Changing temperature and addition of the catalyst. This can be considered as mixing salt into the water. If you add heat into the water, the molecules will vibrate even more which causes it to dissolve even more, and if you add some sort of proteins, it would be helpful to decrease the activation energy which means that because you don't need that much energy per reaction process, you can easily allow the equation to take place.

Isn't the addition of a catalyst also a way to change it?

Re: Factors Affecting k
In lecture it was said that k can be affected by both temperature and activation energy. I think if these values remain constant, then k will go unchanged for the problem.

Re: Factors Affecting k
I actually learned this in Chem 20L but k depends on the temperature and catalysts(enzymes). I believe the catalysts lower the activation energy and increase reaction rate.

Temperature will change k, but we have not gone into it with too much detail I believe.

Re: Factors Affecting k
The rate constant k can be altered if the temperature is changed, or the activation energy is lowered by introducing a catalyst into the reaction.

Re: Factors Affecting k
Temperature is the only thing that influences k. When you increase temperature, the rate constant increases (as consistent with the Arrhenius Equation) and the reaction proceeds much more quickly.

Re: Factors Affecting k
The rate constant changes as temperature changes. Increasing the temperature increases rate constant K.

Re: Factors Affecting k
I think temperature is the only factor that changes k. A catalyst also changes the rate of the reaction but we haven't done a lot with those yet.

Yes, the rate constant (k) of reaction can change by a change in temperature only.

Re: Factors Affecting k
In today's lecture, Lavelle said that k can change with temperature, activation energy, and the frequency factor. The rate constant determines the speed of the reaction, which increases with increasing temperature, decreases with increasing activation energy, and increases with increasing frequency of collisions. However, the frequency factor A is often considered constant. All of this is shown by the Arrhenius Equation.

K can only be changed if there is a temperature change, it is measure experimentally for a specific reaction.

Re: Factors Affecting k
Similar to the equilibrium constant K, k can only change with a change in temperature. Remember the temperature dependence of K.

Re: Factors Affecting k
rate constant k changes due to temperature. rate=k(concentration) and when you change the temperature, the rate changes but temperature doesn't impact concentration thus it must be changing the rate constant. Increasing temperature increases rate thus increases rate constant. On the other hand, decreasing temperature decreases rate thus it decreases the rate constant.

Re: Factors Affecting k
Yes, either by changing the temperature, or by changing the activation energy via a catalyst, as per the Arrhenius equation:

Re: Factors Affecting k
The rate constant, k, just like the equilibrium constant, K, is affected by a temperature change.

I believe the rate constant only affected If there's a change in temperature.

Re: Factors Affecting k
The rate constant is affected by temperature and activation energy. Decreasing the activation energy by using a catalyst would increase the rate constant. Increasing temperature would also increase the rate constant.
