In a closed system, which can be exchanged: matter or energy?

In a closed system energy can be exchanged but matter cannot. In an isolated system neither energy nor matter can be exchanged and in an open system both energy and matter can be exchanged.

Matter in a closed system can not be exchanged with its surroundings, however the energy is still transferred between surroundings and system. Much like a saucepan with a lid on it on a stove, even though all the matter stays in the saucepan, it still is heated by its surroundings.

In the closed systems, energy can be transferred to the surrounding or surrounding to the system. However, matter cannot be transferred. Think of uninsulated glass jar with closed lid.

In a closed system, energy can be exchanged but matter cannot. This is different than an open system, in which both matter and energy can be exchanged, or in an isolated system, in which neither matter or energy can be exchanged.
