Testing with a periodic table
I am curious about what testing procedures will be like when we do have tests, especially when we have problems where we need to use a periodic table. I'm assuming proctoring will monitor things like our eyes, mouth movements, etc. How will we be able to access a periodic table? Will most of the molar masses be given to us in the question? Will we have to print it out beforehand? Though, this might be hard for other students to answer. Any theories? Thanks anyway!

Re: Testing with a periodic table
I am assuming a periodic table and information needed will be available to us in an online version during exams, similar to how the Sapling website gives us access to those resources. But, I am sure your question will be answered by the professor when we get closer to the exam!

Re: Testing with a periodic table
In today's lecture video, Professor Lavelle mentioned everyone having the same periodic table so we will all use the same molar mass for the elements.

Re: Testing with a periodic table
We will have to be careful if the exams are proctored. My friend told me that she studied super hard for an exam and while she was taking it she read out loud the questions to herself to better comprehend it. The instructor watching her thought that she was reading the questions out loud to a friend as a way of cheating so she got a 0% on a test she should have passed. Lesson learned: don't move your lips when taking an online test!

Re: Testing with a periodic table
As someone mentioned, I believe we will be using the same periodic table to ensure that we use the same values. I'm assuming that we'll receive a pdf or link of some sort and then have to print it out.

Re: Testing with a periodic table
In todays lecture lavelle mentioned how we would need to have a periodic table and how we would all need the same one, he hasn't gone over in depth how tests are going to work but we will have access to a periodic table one way or another.

Re: Testing with a periodic table
I have another question- will we get to have our constants and equations sheet next to us during the exams?

Re: Testing with a periodic table
I would assume so. I think that he may provide us with the equation sheet and constants in the problem as well, or there may be a hyperlink to a sheet full of constants. I don't know for sure though, I think he will clarify later on in the quarter.

Re: Testing with a periodic table
In my discussion section last week this question came up. My TA said that for all tests we'd most likely be provided the same periodic table as to ensure that the molar masses for each element are the same so that students don't get the wrong answer due to a rounding issue. Even if this isn't the case, I'm sure some form of a periodic table will be allowed because some things (i.e. finding molar mass, etc.) are impossible to do unless you've memorized the whole table. Either that or everything we need from the table will be given to us in the problem. Hope this helps :)

Hi there,
I believe that we are going to be given a periodic table along with a formula sheet with helpful formulas and constants that are allowed to be of aid on the exams this quarter.

I remember the professor saying that equations and the periodic table will be given to us! I'm pretty sure he will go more in depth as the midterm creeps up on us.

Re: Testing with a periodic table
I think he will provide us with a list of equations, constants, and the periodic table so that it is standardized for all students during the test!

I hope this doesn't happen, I know that reading questions out loud and looking away from a screen monitor for a break are essential test-taking strategies people use.

We will be provided with a periodic table and the necessary equations and constants for the midterm.

Re: Testing with a periodic table
On Dr. Lavelle's chem14a website, there exists a hyperlink to a periodic table and an equations sheet. While I do not know whether or not we are required to print them out or if they are going to be the same ones given to us during the exam, I would look into them to see what equations and constants we will be given as well as the periodic table to see where the rounding on atomic masses of each element ends.
Re: Testing with a periodic table
We're all meant to use the same periodic table from Professor Lavelle's website

Re: Testing with a periodic table
Hey, its funny cause I was wondering the same thing in class today! I would expect all of us to have the same periodic table during tests to make sure the calculations are all the same. I think Dr. Lavelle has one on his class website so I would expect that to be the one to use on exams as well. Although I'm not sure if we're go8ing to get pdf copies of it or would it be pulled up on a big screen?
