Chem 14B Enrollment
If I remember correctly, Lavelle said that he accepts everyone off the waitlist. Do you guys think it would be smart to enroll in CHEM14B with the second pass then? Or how are you guys approaching enrollment?

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
I think that it would depend on the other classes that you are taking. If you are taking high demand classes than you should enroll in those for first pass, and then 14B for second, but if not, then I would just enroll in 14B for your first pass :)

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
It depends on what classes you're taking. I know Chem 14BL fills up fast, so if you wanted to take that with Chem 14B then I'd sign up for both first pass b/c 14B is a co-requisite for 14BL. I need to take LS30B though and that fills up faster so I'm using my first pass on it, but I'm not sure if I should do Chem 14B or LS7A for first pass :(

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
I tried to take Chem 14A last spring, but it was already full by the time of my second pass. So, I would suggest you take it during your first pass because this class fills up fast too. However, if you think you have other classes that may fill up faster then go with them!

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
When I was first registering for 14a my orientation advisor told me that chem is one of the fastest filled class, so I'm assuming that still holds for 14B. I was going to try and do 14b in my first pass, but I'm sure if you get on the waitlist through the second pass it'll be fine.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
At first, I thought enrolling in Chem 14B during my second pass would be smart since Dr. Lavelle accepts people from the waitlist and looking at my class planner, it seems like there are some spaces open for Chem 14A too, so I'm hoping that would hold the same for Chem 14B. However, we cannot be certain so I recommend watching how classes are getting filled up during our first pass. We have until November 18 11:59 PM to change things before the first pass ends, so just prioritize the classes that you think will get filled up quickly!
Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
I would still recommend enrolling in Chem14B during the first pass as it fills up very quickly.

In my opinion, I would take LS7A for first pass because it's a high demand class so there's no guarantee you'll be able to get in. However, with Chem 14B, you have more of a possibility to get in because even if it gets full, Dr. Lavelle takes in students from the waitlist. I'm not sure if that would be the case for LS7A. So, I think that's the safer way to do it.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Students who have taken the Chem14 series have told me to use my first pass for enrolling in chemistry. Though there may be open spots left for your second enrollment pass, it may not be for the lecture/discussion that fits your schedule. I will use my first enrollment pass for Chem14B and for LS7A. It also depends on which other classes you want to enroll in :)

I was wondering this too. I think I'll probably try enroll during my second pass and hopefully it works out!

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
It depends on what other class you're enrolling in but you can watch both closely as your enrollment time gets closer and see which is filling up fastest. I'm pretty sure 14B will be formatted like this class is, so you should have more flexibility if you do 14B second pass because it doesn't matter as much what lecture you enroll in timewise. Also, if you know someone who has extra units you can try to have them save you a space if your second pass enrollment time is late.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Like a couple people mentioned, I think the answer really depends on how your other classes are going to look like. If you're looking to get a specific lecture/discussion time, first pass would be a smart choice. I think it's really amazing that Dr. Lavelle lets in everyone on the waitlist, but I don't know if that would guarantee that the time you get will work perfectly with your other class schedules.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Do people usually take Chem 14B with Chem 14BL? I'm planning on doing that, but I'm not sure which one will fill up faster.

Chem 14B is a pre-req/co-req for Chem 14BL so either way you would have to enroll in 14B first.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
I would definitely wait until it is closer to your enrollment pass to make that call. I've gone into enrolling with a plan made weeks in advance to scrapping it all right before because of the amount of open spaces. I would know which classes you want to take next quarter and play it by ear.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
I agree with above posts! Definitely be prepared to go with different plans as things might change closer to enrollment. Personally, I'd prioritize whichever class is in highest demand. Good luck!

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
A lot of the above responses already covered the jist of it so I just wanted to drop an additional resource: https://stack.dailybruin.com/2020/02/05/class-fill-ups/ This is a graph from the Daily Bruin that allows you to find how quickly a class filled up last winter since it's likely this year's enrollment will mirror last year's trends. According to the graph, Chem 14B really never filled up. I plan to still enroll in Chem 14B and then a math course, two of my major-related courses before finding a GE since there's so many GEs to choose from.
Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
While it's true that you might still be able to enroll in 14B, another factor also depends on the schedule you want to have. You might want to use your first pass on classes that you want a very specific discussion/lecture time even if there are spots available at other times.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Personally, I am using my first pass to enroll in LS30B and Chem14A so that I have my main classes and the times set so that I could plan my other GE's around the class times instead of the other way around.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
I would suggest first pass unless your other classes are even more competitive to get into. It also depends on what classes you need versus just want.

I think it will, just like 14A

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Im enrolling in 14B during my second enrollment pass because everyone is accepted off the waitlist. Also, this is because the other classes get filled pretty quick so I guess it depends on which other classes you are planning on taking.
Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Like the above question asked, did Dr. Lavelle mention that 14b will be asynchronous as well?

I would monitor enrollment as it gets closer to your first pass and then decide

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
Definitely monitor the class as enrollment progresses because during my first enrollment it looked like the class was not going to be filled up but I used it anyways because I really wanted to and my other classes were not as essential. By the time the day my enrollment finished it was filled up. I luckily grabbed a spot but some of my friends did not.

Re: Chem 14B Enrollment
This is from Professor Lavelle's website under enrollment questions;
'I play no administrative role. In other words I play no role in determining the size,
venue or number of times a first-year chemistry course is offered and I cannot
help with class or discussion section enrollment questions. I also have no access
to student records (they are confidential) and therefore cannot access databases
to know who has paid fees, who is on a wait list, etc"
- hope this helps!
