Participation Points
Is there any way to check to see if you're getting your participation points through Chemistry Community? I tend to post 5-7 times a week, but I'm not sure if all my posts are "valid" posts to get points and was wondering if there was any way to find out? Thanks!

Re: Participation Points
To add to this question, if we post more than 5 times in a week, will the extra posts count for points as well or is it limited to 5 points per week?

Re: Participation Points
5 points per week.
But many students are posting way more because they get assistance or like to assist others.

If we post less than five times in a week, can we make up for it by posting more the following week?

I don't think that posts can carry over or be used for the previous week.
I'm pretty sure that you can only get a maximum of 5 points per week

I also keep clicking on my name to view my points but it is not showing. Where do we click again to view our points?

If I understand correctly you can get up to five points a week by posting on chemistry community so if you click on the number of posts under your name you will be able to see every post you made and the day you posted it. From that you can determine how many posts you posted per week and count your points. Hope that makes sense!

Hi! I think it's not directly on your name by right next to your name, on the left there is like a little paper followed by "by (insert name)". I think that means "Posts by _____" If you click on the little paper icon by your name, it should also give you the number of posts to the far right of your screen.

If you click on "Quick links" at the top right of the page you can select "Your posts" from the drop down menu. This will take you to a page that shows all of the topics you've made a post on. At the top right of this page there should be something that says "Search found X matches" where X is the total amount of posts you have made. Hope this helps!

Hi! On this general note, do the five posts per week get tallied up on Sunday nights or Friday nights of each week? Thanks!

If I post 7 posts one week and only 3 the other week will I get full points like is there carry over for the weeks?
Re: Participation Points
So posting on chem community at a min of five times a week, every week for the next quarter is our participation right? will we be doing this for chem 14b as well?

Yes, we earn our participation points for CHEM 14A by posting on Chemistry Community, but I am not sure if it is the same format for CHEM 14B.

Is it strictly 5 posts per week in terms of the participation points or is it a total of 50 at the end of the quarter?

It is strictly a maximum of 5 points per week, so if you make less than 5 posts one week you wouldn't be able to make it up.

Re: Participation Points
Since we could earn maximum of 5 points per week, in order to get the full participation points, you should have at least 20 posts by the end of week 4.

Do you still get credit for your posts regardless of whether your answering a chemistry specific question or a more general administrative question?

Do we get points for every post we make? Because people are saying to just look under yours posts to see our participation points.

Re: Participation Points
I think we do get points for every post we make. I don't think we can actually see how many points we have but ya I think if you only submitted three posts instead of 5 you would get partial credit but I'm not sure.
Re: Participation Points
You can click on Quick Links on the upper left hand corner, which will take you to "Your Posts". You can see all the posts you made and make sure you posted 5 times this week.

From what I have heard, I do not think that they will roll over. But I am not 100% sure about this, so if anyone knows I would also like to confirm if it does roll over or not!

Re: Participation Points
I have been looking around trying to figure out how to get points for this website and nobody has given me a helpful answer. I tried asking my TA but I didn't really get an answer, I sent a message via this website 2-3 weeks ago but got no response. It is currently week 5 so I guess my grade is absolutely ruined. I've been trying to find Dr. Lavelle's email but I guess i can only send messages via this site so I don't really know what to do. Is there a way to recover the points I missed out on because I had asked early on about this website and never received an answer. Thanks

I think that simply posting in this forum, helping others with questions, and asking questions yourself should be sufficient for participation points. You can earn 5 per week if I remember correctly.

You can also check your progress via MyUCLA. I saw today that I have 20/50 points which is what I should have since i posted 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Hope this helps :)

I'm not sure if this question got answered earlier in the thread, but do posts have to be strictly chem related (like asking or answering a lecture question) to earn points, or would a post like this one count towards the weekly total?
Re: Participation Points
Just want to be sure, do we have to post five posts each week, or it would be fine as long as we have 50 posts at the end of the quarter?

Since it's participation points, I don't think it has to be strictly regarding chemistry material. This post is an example of something that could count.

Ruochen Yang 3B wrote:I thought it was 50 posts at the end of the quarter! Do we have ways to make up?
This is what I thought so too because, according to an upperclassman that took Chem 14A with Lavelle in the past, as long as you have the required number of posts by the end of the quarter we should get full credit. I have also looked at my grade on MyUCLA for this class and it seems to be graded simply by the total number of posts rather than on a week-by-week basis (like there's only one place stating our Chemistry Community grade vs one grade each week for it).
5 posts per week could simply be a recommendation to keep ourselves on track/accountable and not stress ourselves out at the end of the quarter to somehow make all 50 posts in a short period of time or something.
Honestly though, I'm not too sure.

I was wondering this too and couldn't figure out where I'm supposed to click on my name, but I noticed that if you look at one of your posts, on the right hand side it says how many posts you've made, so as long as you have 5 posts per week you should get full credit.
