Lewis structure for formaldehyde
How come the hydrogen in CH20 doesn't have 8 filled valence electrons like C and O

Re: Lewis structure for formaldehyde
Hydrogen can only hold 2 electrons in its valence shell and is an exception to the octet rule.
It only has access to the 1s subshell which holds a maximum of 2 electrons.

Just to add on, besides hydrogen, other exceptions where the atom can only have 2 valence electrons instead of a full octet are helium and lithium.

Hydrogen is an exception to the octet rule where it can only have 2 valence electrons, or up to the 1s state, filled.

Re: Lewis structure for formaldehyde
Hydrogen is in the 1s state and therefore will not follow the octet guideline
