grade worries
Hey all! I was just wondering if anyone else is starting to think about grades. I know we've only had one midterm so far, but I've been thinking about what my final grade would be and what I should aim for for my next few tests.
Is anyone else in the same boat as me?

Same! Especially after taking this first midterm I realized we don't have a lot of points to make up for points lost on the tests and it stresses me out a bit so I've been worrying about my final grade while studying for the next midterm.

Hello, I'm in the same boat! Considering the class size, I'm sure there are many other students who are in the same situation. While I think I did okay of the first midterm, my score was still lower than what I was aiming for. Let's study well and do better on the next midterm and final :)

Re: grade worries
A student told our workshop session that Dr. Lavelle stated the first midterm would be out of 100 points instead of 110! Hopefully this helps some of your stresses/worries since everyone's first midterm score will be slightly curved!

Yeah, thinking about your grades is natural. Something I would suggest to relief your worries is to think back to what you did good and bad on during the first midterm because that will help you feel a little more confident in your ability and understand your previous mistakes.

Re: grade worries
hello, I looked into this, and I found on the internet that many students said that Dr. Lavelle sort of moves the grades around the average at the end of the quarter. I do not know if this pertains to this quarter or what it means about the midterm bump, that I also heard he is doing, but I hope this helped at least a little.

I've been worried about my grade as well. I think as long as you study as much as you can and attend step-up sessions/workshops for clarification, you should do well on the next midterm and the final.

Hi! I am also in the boat floating on worry lake, so don't feel too alone. I think if you take how you felt about the first midterm and compare it to how you want to do on the next few tests, then you can try different study materials/reviewing styles if you want to do better or if you feel as though your previous study ways just aren't cutting it.

I feel like worrying about grades is common grounds for all students, especially us UCLA overachiever students. However, just do your best because that's all you can do. But if you continue to worry, it's all good. Only 4 more weeks to go!

Hi! I'm also in the same boat and it's been bothering me so much, but right now, all we can do is study and improve! Worrying really wouldn't do anything, so just focus on studying and hope that we'll get the grade we deserve!

Yes, i feel the same way, i’m worried about the next midterms and my grades. I think I saw in the syllabus that we need at least 50% or higher to get a C-? I’m not exactly sure how that works.
Re: grade worries
I'm definitely feeling the same way. I plan on just studying more and dedicating more time to this class to do really well on the next midterm and final. Maybe altering your studying methods and adjusting how much time you spend on the class material might help make a difference on your next midterm and final. :) Good luck!

You are literally not the only one. Trust me when I say that. If you ask anyone, no matter what grade or major, they will literally say they are where you are or have been when you stand. I personally get really anxious when it comes to grades because I'm not the best test taker, but trust the system. If you think you're going to fail a class, you probably won't. This is the hardest pill I had to swallow my first year, but really, it just takes time perfecting your study habits, anxieties, and overall balancing everything. But in the end, everything works out.

I'm just worried because someone said we can only miss 35 points in total for an A...and each question on the exams are worth so much so it's basically like you can only miss 3 questions.

I understand you, I am worried about grades too. Something good though is that we have another midterm and a final to make up any points. as long as we attend step-up sessions and office hours, we should be in route to earn a good grade.

I've been stressed too, just remember to have a growth mindset and mentally prepare yourself when taking an exam. I found that this works when I feel like im unprepared even though I've studied and done everything that I needed to. Trust the process :)

Re: grade worries
I've been worried about my grades after the midterm too, especially since the True/False questions are worth a lot of points but don't offer the same forgiveness as the Calculation questions (where you can receive partial credit). I set up a grade calculator for myself, which helps me feel like I have greater "control" because I know what scores I need to get my desired grade. Some people may find that a grade calculator causes them more stress though, so to each their own :) Attending office hours and the workshops helped me too. I hope there's at least something in this post that may help!

Re: grade worries
After deciding to apply to grad school in the near future, yes, grades are a huge worry for me. I think for the next two exams, aim for no more than 30 points incorrect each. It really depends on what you got on your first midterm and what you want as a final grade, but any more than 30 points incorrect is not ideal.

I'm in the same boat too :// didn't do bad on the first midterm, but we still have 2 big tests coming up we can't lose over 30 points on, and I feel less prepared for midterm 2... I try not to think too much about it but if I ever want to predict my grade for the class I just go on the syllabus to calculate some estimates

I know it's really easy to get stressed about final grades and point and stuff but there's still a whole midterm and the final exam and points you can earn through chemistry community and sapling. So don't stress too much! There is plenty of time to catch up and there are plenty of points still out there!

Re: grade worries
I am also worried about my grade and I am not feeling as confident for this midterm, but I am constantly calculating my grade and this kind of destressed me. The final will probably be the most stressful since all of the other grades are final and our total grade solely depends on how we perform on that.

i'm also definitely worried about the grade in general but i wouldn't stay too stressed considering you only need 50% to pass the class. i know it's not ideal to set standards that low haha but knowing that we have that kind of safety net (?) to at least pass is pretty reassuring and decreases the worries even for just a bit.

I agree with others, I've been worrying about the weight of midterm grades for awhile.

I think it's important not to stress too much about grades right now considering we barely passed the halfway mark. We have another midterm and final to try to get our grades in a better position. We got this!

Re: grade worries
Grades are something I intentionally distract myself from thinking of because they can be stressful. For those of you who didn't perform as well on the first midterm as you would have liked, I would just say that stressing about potential outcomes of failure really isn't going to do anything to help. Just put as much effort as you're able to given the circumstances we're all living in right now and you'll be fine.

I relate to a lot of you on this. I will calculate how many more points I can miss altogether or even on my next midterm before I lose my chances of getting an A. Its especially worrying when the midterms have such few questions that one question can make you lose a lot of points. I think the best thing to do is set your goals and after you take your midterm or final forget about it because you can't do anything about it anymore, that's how I avoid extra stress.

Re: grade worries
I mean as long as you're on this site that has a bunch of answers to any question you can ask, I hope most of your worries can be assuaged. The last midterm was actually a lot more straightforward than I thought it would be. Conceptual questions weren't that hard to understand at least for me. Although there aren't a lot of questions it just means you have more time to focus on each one since we have an hour basically to do all of them and they're multiple choice.

Yes, I am stressed about my grade right now because I did very badly on the first midterm and now I have to save my grade. My TA says I have nothing to worry about, but I think she is just trying to be encouraging.

I'm sure a lot of us are in the same boat now! It's definitely stressful when each question carries a lot of weight, but all we can do is try our best! I found that the workshops and step-up sessions help a lot! In the last few days leading up to midterm 1 I tried to review all the lectures notes, discussion notes, hw, and textbook questions so everything was relatively fresh, and then once the test was over I tried not to worry as much since I did everything I could! We got this guys!!

Re: grade worries
Yes, I am always super anxious about my grades, and sometimes I feel super disconnected from UCLA so it gets hard to learn. These past few weeks have been back to back midterms so I haven't had as much time to study as for the first midterm, which means cramming for me til Tuesday morning. But just know that there are a lot of people who are feeling the stress, and are worried about their overall grade. It's kind of inevitable. But, learn from your mistakes and struggles from MT1, strive for a higher grade, and make sure to take a breath.

Re: grade worries
Instead of spending the time stressing about my grade (which I do my fair share of) and I like to spend that energy on working to improve it. This is a habit I am trying to change for myself. I think that if you spend time to know the material and really understand it, the grade will hopefully come with it, so don't stress too much!

Re: grade worries
Usually after seeing a midterm grade, I tend to take a breather/break to focus on myself and not let myself get too anxious about my grade. And then I just focus on lectures and improving my studying habits (its been wayyy harder to study at home that I expected compared to campus). But I've learned that at the end of the day, we shouldn't be so harsh on ourselves and to just keep grinding.

I try not to constantly worry about my grades as it stresses me out, but obviously I can't just avoid it and find myself worrying about them a lot. It helps me to just take the course one step at a time, thinking that one test grade won't kill my grade, there's still more to come.

Re: grade worries
I'm worried about my grade in this class and especially about how I'll do on this midterm. This material is slightly harder for me and I want to make sure I don't do horribly so that I have a little buffer for the final since I know that's cumulative. But at the end of the day, I'm sure everything will work out fine and it's only one class so given the circumstances I'm sure you're doing great.

Hi! I'm in the same boat. I've been trying to focus less on the numbers, and more on how to study effectively so I can do well on the next midterm and the final exam. If you wanted to see where you're at, I think you could calculate your current grade based on the breakdown from the syllabus.

Yes, I'm also thinking about my final grade and the upcoming midterm and final exam. It does make me a bit nervous when I think about the amount of points that I can miss to keep a certain grade. Just be sure to do the Sapling homework and get those Chemistry Community points, because every point is important!

I think about my grades all the time, probably too much of the time. Honestly you've just got to make sure you're trying your best and taking advantage of all the resources offered to you. After that, you've basically done all you can and I think there's some reassurance in that.

I am especially worried about my grade and the upcoming tests because I didn't do as well on the first midterm as I had hoped. Regardless of my knowledge of the material, I generally perform poorly on tests, especially when stressed, so I have been working on calming strategies and breathing techniques to help me with this.

Re: grade worries
You shouldn't be worried if you think you've done enough to prepare for the class; that's what I tell myself when I get concerned about not doing well in a class. If you're worried then you should change your habits: study more, study more effectively, and talk to the TAs if you can.

I'm comforted by the fact that other people are also worried about their grades. This quarter has been super difficult for a lot of people because of Zoom schooling and being stuck at home, but we're all going through similar experiences and we'll get through it together!

I am always worried about grades, and I bet most pre meds and college students in general can relate to this. Just take one day at a time, and always keep in mind there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as well as the fact that grades don't define. Your actions do.

Also... give yourself a break. We all made it to UCLA so we are of course going to be super concerned with grades and such, but we're going through a big transition and learning how college, quarter system, etc. works. Being online doesn't help either.

Oh for sure I feel the same way. I did much worse than I had hoped for on midterm 1 so I kinda don't have much hope for getting an A or an A+ in this class, but I just hope that I did okay enough on midterm 2 to still allow me to get a B/B+ :(

Yes. You can review your midterm if you ask your TA and go to their office hours. This is what my TA told my discussion, but I'm sure if you asked your TA, they would do the same.

i am also reqlly worrried for grades because I don't know if anyone else had this problem but chem community was so hard to navigate for me. A couple of times I ended up on the Chem 14B section and so I just gave up on it for a while and now my anxiety about grades is starting to creep back up on me. I study as much as I can and go to PLF but some how I feel like I don't know anything when the midterm comes around.

I feel like the second midterm is more difficult than the first one. I wasn't really worried about the first exam since I'm cool with calculation questions. I feel like the second midterm is more memorization oriented and I couldn't really find an efficient way to master it.

Re: grade worries
I am a little worried, but I realize that it is my first quarter of college and I'm still getting used to it. I will probably decide to pass no pass right before the deadline week 9.

Re: grade worries
In response to the above comment, are people opting P/NP? Should I? What are the benefits/negatives of this?

Yes, definitely. This first midterm was rough, and the second midterm was tough too--but if you aren't feeling comfortable with your current footing in the course right now you can always change your grading type to pass/no pass :)

Re: grade worries
I am also worried about my grade :( It makes me nervous that the second midterm didn't have any partial credit either.

Re: grade worries
I don't think there was a specific date mentioned. However, you can try to ask your TA for an update. I think Dr. Lavelle will email us once the grades are out.almost_ethan wrote:Does anyone know when we should be receiving our grades for midterm 2?

Re: grade worries
Don't be stressed out! I think you can make easy points through weekly homework and chem community participation. The best way to boost your grade is definitely to get as many points as possible in your exams. Just work hard and try to do the textbook problems assigned, and you'll be fine.

Re: grade worries
I think it's perfectly normal for us to be worried about our grades, as weird as that sounds. Just know that you're not alone and as long as you don't give up I'm sure you'll be able to overcome your grades!!

Re: grade worries
Yup, very worried. I think many people are doing very good in this class so I am afraid the high class average will affect my grade negatively.

Re: grade worries
A couple people have mentioned changing grades to P/NP, but I'm wondering if this will affect how this class counts towards major requirements, or qualifications/prerequisites for classes in the future.

Re: grade worries
I am worried about my grade but we still have a few weeks to continue studying for the final. Good luck to everyone on their final!
