Winter 2021 Classes

Postby Alvin Lai 3J » Mon Nov 16, 2020 3:19 pm

Hello, I am thinking of taking Chem 14B and Chem 14BL next quarter along with LS30B. Is the minimum units per quarter 12 or 13? If it is 13, then I would have to take another class, probably a GE since Chem 14B is 4 units, Chem 14BL is 3 units, and LS30B is 5 units which equals 12 units. Please help!

I believe 12 units is the minimum! Anything lower requires requires approval.

I think that the minimum is 12 units, so you should be all good!

12 units minimum is required to be considered a full-time student!

Thank you! Also, would it be okay to take the Chem 14BL Lab section from 11am-1:30pm on Friday even though it goes into Chem 14B's friday lecture at 1pm, since the lecture is recorded?

I think that should be fine! From what I understand, the lectures will still be asynchronous like they are now, so it shouldn't hurt to have an "overlapping" class during the time slot.

Yes! When enrolling, you might get an error notification due to the overlap but you can quickly bypass it by clicking accept the time conflict! this should not be a problem at all!

As long as you have 12 units you're good!

Like most people have said, 12 units is the minimum, but also be aware that if you only have 12 units, you have to stick through all your classes for the quarter without dropping. If you drop any class, you'd have to enroll in another before your second pass ends in early January so that you don't fall under the unit cap! Just wanted to mention that since I know sometimes people drop classes when they don't like them, but if you're at 12 units exactly, you don't exactly have the flexibility to just drop a class easily.

Since 14B will also be pre-recorded it should be perfectly fine to have a time conflict on Fridays. You should be able to catch up on that lecture whenever you need to!

Update: I believe that Lavelle has stated that exams will be during lecture times rather than during discussion, so you might want to avoid overlapping 14B lectures and other classes.

12 units are the minimum, so I wouldn't stress about it too much!

12 is the minimum! That's what you need to be a full-time student. Don't worry about this too much, everything will work out!

Hi Alvin! I am also taking Chem 14B and BL in the winter, I wonder if anyone else is and we could start off the quarter with a study group. Also, if you are looking for 1 extra unit at any time you can also take a Fiat Lux class instead of a GE. They are usually amazing classes because there is 20 people or less in each class, the professor is really passionate about the topic, and they are pass/no pass so you can see if you are interested in a field/topic without committing to the workload of a typical class. In the spring I took Gene Block's class on the university's response to the pandemic which was amazing. I also have taken on Californian documentaries and another one about gentrification in LA. I couldn't them recommend more!

I think it would be alright, but I did also see that in response to another post on chemistry community, Professor Lavelle mentioned possible quizzes or tests during lecture times?

Hey! I also wanted to take Chem 14BL and LS30B at the same time but I noticed that the finals schedule overlapped with each other. Did you end up enrolling in both of these classes?

I would avoid overlap with the lecture time because Professor Lavelle said in an email that tests are during lecture times instead of during discussions.

12 units is the minimum for a full time student and 19 units is the maximum unless you have an exception so you can have more units (-:
