Cyclic Structure

Postby Natalie Phan 3G » Sun Nov 29, 2020 11:41 pm

What does it mean for a molecule to have a cyclic structure? This came up in my feedback for a problem on Sapling and I'm unsure on what this means.

That just means the lewis structure forms a circle or ring in the structure. It's not linear like most of our lewis structures that we do. And in that sapling question I believe that the cyclic structure is that the carbon atoms form a triangle and the hydrogens branch off from that. I hope that was clear enough and helps!

A molecule has a cyclic structure if its atoms form a loop or ring.

A cyclic structure is a ring structure, or one that is not linear. A molecule like Benzene would have a cyclic structure, as it forms a hexagon shape with the carbons. A cyclic structure would form a triangle, hexagon, or other shape instead of a straight line (linear structures form more straight lines).
