Using ido or o
In the textbook, anionic ligands were named as fluorido, chlorido, or bromido with the -ido at the end. However, in lecture and in the textbook answer key, the ide is completely dropped and replaced with o like chloro. When do you use -ido and when do you use -o?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Using ido or o
I believe that using -ido is the IUPAC name convention and both are correct, but Dr. Lavelle said to drop the -ide and use -o.
If you reference his ligand names in coordination compounds sheet he shows both the name and IUPAC name, but he holds the name section which is what I believe he wants us to use.

Re: Using ido or o
I believe either one is okay to use. In this class, I'm pretty sure that we will mostly be using -o (ex. chloro and cyano). Hope this helps.

Hi!
They are both correct but in this class I think that we would be using -o much more than the other option.

Re: Using ido or o
For the tests, I would probably just use -o since that is what he focused on for his lecture.

Re: Using ido or o
Hi! In today's lecture, Lavelle told us it was fine to use either, but he used -o in his lectures. -ido is a new naming convention that not many people know about yet.

Re: Using ido or o
Just a heads up, the textbook uses the -ido convention but the Sapling HW uses o!

Re: Using ido or o
Yeah I had the same question a while ago, and Dr. Lavelle just answered it in the most recent lecture. I got the Sapling question wrong several times because I was using chlorido instead of chloro, so I think we're mostly going to be using chloro for this class

Re: Using ido or o
-ido is the new IUPAC convention but it is not widely recognized yet so Dr. Lavelle said we can just use -o.

He said that both are acceptable, but -o is more common and widely used in chemistry.

He used -o in his lecture so to be safe, I'd say use -o because that's what he presented to us.

Re: Using ido or o
The IUPAC uses -ido, rather than -o, but Dr. Lavelle uses -o since this version is used more in our future chemistry courses. I hope this helped!

Re: Using ido or o
Like everyone else has basically been saying, I would stick to using -o since it's what Dr. Lavelle uses.

You can use either one. However, since Dr. Lavelle emphasized dropping the -ide and adding -o, I would use this process instead.

Hi! Dr. Lavelle said that the textbook specifically uses -ido, and we are free to use either that or -o, but he will be using -o in class and for Sapling. Hope this helps!

Re: Using ido or o
The textbook uses the new naming convention. However, as Dr. Lavelle mentioned in the most recent lecture, either the new way or the more common (old) way is fine. I would just keep in mind that, for example, either saying chloro or chlorido is an option, and both work fine.

I believe this was mentioned in today's lecture. -ido is the updated IUPAC ending, but we'll be using -o for our assignments.

Re: Using ido or o
Dr. Lavelle went over it during his lecture and said that both ways are acceptable. The textbook and sapling use -ido meanwhile he uses -o.

Re: Using ido or o
-ido is the IUPAC name convention, while -o is the older way. The older method is what we are using and learning now, but -ido is also accepted.

Like people said, you can use both. I think Dr. Lavelle uses the -o way, but both are acceptable.

Re: Using ido or o
In the lecture, it was said that both are acceptable, but since Dr. Lavelle and our homework are using -o, I will stick to that.
Re: Using ido or o
In his lecture, Dr. Lavelle stated that either -ido (IUPAC) or -o (traditional) is acceptable.
