Week 8/9 Thoughts/Worries

Postby Jalaia Jackson 2G » Sun Nov 29, 2020 1:01 am

How does everyone feel about the class so far? I feel like it is going well, there are some points where I could've done better. Does anyone feel the same?

I feel there are definitely many rooms for improvement in terms of how I study and prepare for the exams. I also feel very comfortable in this class because of the extensive resources available, especially the UA sessions.

Yeah, so far this class hasn't been as bad considering how much I hated chemistry in high school (and still kind of do). I do think I could probably do better if I had more time to do extra studying/practice, but I'm doing as much as my schedule will permit.

I feel like I have room for improvement, but overall I feel somewhat calm. Of course, I'm still going to study like crazy.

I feel like I'm understanding the content so far, but I still don't feel very confident for the final :/

But no matter what, I'm going to study my hardest and hope for the best. Best of luck to everyone!

Although chemistry is one of the subjects I tend to struggle most with, I still feel relatively okay in this class. However, a big part of my anxiety is how the grading scale leaves little to no room for error. I am still studying as much as possible, but I definitely have to ramp it up in time for the final. At least a lot of resources are offered, but again, it is super scary knowing that one too many mistakes on a test can leave you with a horrendous grade, making me super nervous for the final exam.

I'm feeling worried about the final because of how the format of the Midterms where but it's almost over so I'm happy about that. Thanks for asking.

I feel fine about the material, but a little bit worried about my grade because I have not done as well on the midterms as I expected. However, this class is not as bad as I thought it would be and I am definitely glad that there are so many resources for us. I really have to prepare for the final.

I feel like overall it has been going well. I like with this class there are a lot of ways to practice what we are learning -- UA sessions, textbook problems, chem community, and sapling. I started a little shaky on the first exam but I improved on this recent exam as I understand how to study better so I am hoping that I do well on the final.

Being a first year it was hard to transition into a fast paced, self-learning format. I have learned a lot from this class and all my other classes this quarter and will be using what I learned for to be more on top of stuff next quarter.

It's been going okay for me. I've had quite a number of bumps throughout the quarter, since the last time I took chemistry was years ago and overall transitioning into being a student again has been challenging (especially with the quarter system). But overall, I've learned a lot about myself and what I can improve going into future quarters. I'm worried for the final since my midterm grades haven't been the best but I'm gonna push through and do my best, even if it's not how I initially thought things would work out.

I also feel like it has been going well overall. A lot of the material is review from AP chem, which I took last year, so I feel pretty confident going into the final, but I do have some reviewing to do.

So far I feel okay because I think I am understanding the materials so far. The upcoming material is what is worrying me a little which is why I am not so confident about the final, but I hope to utilize all these resources well.

Honestly I think that I understand the material pretty well, but my exams aren't reflecting that to be honest. I'm worried about juggling review and studying future concepts in all honesty.

I feel okay in this class because I think I have been working fairly consistently throughout the quarter, but I am concerned for some of my other classes that have massive projects due at the end and it is hard to gauge if I have made enough progress on them by this week.

I like this class a lot better than AP chem. However, I feel like I could've also done better at some points. Like others have said, I'm just trying to push through these next two weeks. I'm a bit scared about the grading scale and my final grade but that's okay!!

It's going okay, I've been relying a lot on previous knowledge that I learned from AP chem and overall I'd say I'm not doing too bad, but I definitely need to work on my studying habits and spend more time preparing for the final than I did the midterm.

I feel kinda okay about the material so far, but I just wish the tests weren't so high-stake where missing a few questions could drop you a whole letter grade. While this is true, I do really appreciate all of the resources he provides us to solidify our knowledge on the material.

Hi!
Honestly, I feel pretty concerned about the final. I definitely have a lot I need to brush up on over the next two weeks. It seems like we have a lot of time, but I know the days can go by so quickly, so that's been on the forefront of my mind. I'm going to try to create a study schedule for myself, hopefully I actually stick to it lol. Good luck studying!!

Hello,
Yes, week 9 is the last week to switch to pass/no pass. However, if this class is a major requirement class for you then you are required to take it for a letter grade. I would go on your department website to access this information! Hope this helps.

I feel pretty okay about this class! I just usually get super stressed and anxious around midterms and finals time unfortunately )): other than that though, I feel like there's a lot of resources in this class so I always feel like I have help if I ask for it.

I feel relatively okay in this class - tons of resources, great textbook, descriptive videos. The only issue with me is that I constantly fall behind on lectures and have to do a ton of catching up. First midterm was good, but my second I didn't perform my best. So I am a little anxious about the final because I know I have to do well. I am happy that I have Lavelle again next quarter though because I know how to improve my study habits now, plus I understand the class dynamic more :)

I was so lazy in week 8 because of thanksgiving and all. But I did get some nice retail therapy in to treat myself for doing the bare minimum. *Sigh* I'm already exhausted from finals week and I haven't even done anything but think about it.

I find that its been hard to stay focused as the quarter is almost over. I also got a bit discouraged in this class because I did not do as well on the midterms as I had hoped or thought that I did. Regardless, I plan to study extensively for the final and hopefully end the glass with a good grade.

I feel the same way. It is my first quarter at UCLA and I've learned what to do and what not to do in the future. Lavelle has been the best professor for chemistry and I am glad he gives us all of these resources. I was feeling a bit down but todays lecture about myoglobin and hemoglobin really interested me and allowed me to realize how interested I am of the chemistry within the human body--so I plan to use this excitement to further motivate me to do better in the class! :)

After the first midterm, I learned how to study better and did well on the second midterm. I'm feeling pretty good overall about the content but a little daunted for the amount of material I need to review for the final. I'm sure we'll all do great though. Good luck everyone :D

I feel pretty good so far! I definitely studied really hard for the two midterms and it was worth it, but I just need to make sure I stay as motivated for the final. I've also been trying to attend more UA sessions than I usually do so that's helped a lot too.

This quarter has been a rollercoaster, especially this class, but I still enjoy the material quite a lot. I definitely felt like I could have done better on the midterms, all the little mistakes I made on them cost me a higher grade in the class and it's an icky feeling. Mentally preparing myself for the worst on the final.

I feel like its pretty decent overall. The grading scale for this class is kinda scary and there's no room for error so I'm kinda scared for the final. Overall though, there are a lot of review sessions and workshops available to us. Im also split about having the tests mc because its all or nothing but it would also be hard to do it any other way.

The class has honestly been pretty manageable so far in terms of keeping up with the workload and finding resources to make sure I fully understand the material. That being said, I do think the testing system could be improved somewhat. For the final, if we all take it during the same time slot, I honestly think that we should all be given the same questions. I've been lucky enough that I haven't encountered any seemingly unfair questions on either of my midterms, but I know many people who have gotten much harder questions than I have and their grades suffered as a result. I also think that partial credit on the midterms would be wonderful in easing stress.

I feel like the hardest part for me is grasping the conceptual material for the exams, I feel like there are always questions that surprise me when it comes to the concepts. Do you guys have any good ways or sources to review the conceptual material for the final?

Weeks 8 and 9 always feel so stressful because there's this pressure to go extra hard with studying for the final. I, unfortunately, have tapped out of this quarter so whatever I don't know, I truly just don't know. I'll always try to put in the work, but I am done stressing myself out honestly.

I tend to do much better with the calculation/mathematical portions of this class and not as well with the conceptual parts. I did a lot better on the first midterm than the second one. Does anyone have a specific way that they study for conceptual things like hybridization because I have a hard time with that topic.

I think the point distribution is terrible overall, it's so much unnessesary stress in the midst of a global pandemic. I should be spending time with my family and friends, not being cooped up studying in my room 24/7 neglecting myself

I feel pretty okay! I haven't taken any chemistry since sophomore year Honors Chemistry, so I was nervous that I would not perform well in this class. However, at this point, I think I've learned study techniques geared for this specific class and I'm surprised at my performance so far. One thing I've noticed is that lectures tend to be very long and I have a hard time sitting through an hour without feeling like I'm going to burst. I always have to put lectures at 1.25 or 1.5x speed.

I'm worried because I feel like my study habits are getting worse in this class, and that's only going to continue with 14B. I'm hoping next quarter with some schedule changes it'll be more manageable.

I'm a very worried about making silly mistakes and not doing well on the final. Especially since there is no partial credit and grade is heavily dependent on exam scores :<

week 8 and 9 were pretty productive weeks for me, so I'm hoping my productivity keeps up for week 10 where I'll be studying for finals

I'm feeling stressed but I hope that attending some of the review sessions this week will help.

I'm feeling good but definitely stressed about the final and worried if I'm studying enough

I’m feeling pretty good about this class since Dr.Lavelle is offering a lot of help other than lectures like step-up sessions which I’m extremely thankful for.
