Big Sad: Midterm 2

Postby magalysantos_1F » Wed Nov 18, 2020 7:10 pm

After taking the second midterm, I just realized how many mistakes I made and how probable it is that I am not going to pass it haha. While there are students worried about getting an A-, I am worried about getting a passing grade haha. For those of us who have taken it, how are you feeling?

Hopefully this helps:
50% needed to pass
many points still available, 500 points total

I think it was better than the first test, but I'm not that confident either. You'll definitely pass so don't worry too much about it!!!

Hi! As professor Lavelle said you can still pass, you just need a 50% to pass. You can do it! I felt better on this midterm than the last.

I definitely did worse on this one than the last one so I'm also hoping it doesn't drop my grade too much :(

I swear I somehow did worse on this one since math is a little easier for me than conceptual. I guess we'll see :(

Don't stress too much about it you need 50% to pass and keep in mind you have all the extra points for posting on CC and HW and there's still a final exam that you can study hard for in order to improve your grade!

Don't stress about it too much. There is still a lot of time left for you to make up for any bad score. Keep your head up. You got this!

Remember, if you struggled with these topics, try and go to as many step-up and UA sessions as possible. They are honestly such a HUGE help since they go over more complex examples and relate it back to the concepts Lavelle discusses in lectures. We also still have a final to take! Try not to stress about the past since there is nothing you can really do to change it. Instead, focus on the future and doing better. You got this!

Try not to stress about it too much. Even if you made some mistakes, they should help you do better on the final, which is worth more points anyway. Keep your chin up dog you got this :)

I felt the same way the first midterm so I totally understand. Just remember that there are a lot of points you can earn in addition to the midterm! Rooting for you (:

I thought this midterm was significantly harder than the first one so I was pretty bummed after taking the exam. Don't worry about it too much because whatever happened has already happened--just focus on the final and future concepts.

I totally feel you. Smh I feel like I mastered most of the concepts but then when I take the tests, I make such silly errors and feel kind of bummed out since each point has so much worth in our grade. But we will get through this!!!!!

I totally feel you. I thought I had the first midterm in the bag....and i definitely did not.
Also felt like I had concepts for this midterm down and thought it was easier than the last... but I'm praying that the same thing doesn't happen. Scared for my grade.

I wasn't feeling the best since I felt like I did better on the first midterm, but I'm glad that Dr. Lavelle's grading isn't too harsh on students who are having some trouble. Wishing us all the best for the final, we got this!!

I am also very concerned about this midterm as I am pretty sure I did not pass but you just need a 50% in the class to pass.

I felt the same worry after the first midterm because I did not do too well. There is still time and more points to be earned so try not to stress too much! Also, a 50% is still passing, so I am fully confident that you will pass :)

I think this midterm was definitely a bit harder just because of the concepts required for it. There is more conceptual questions that can be asked and lewis structures are really easy to mess up. I was for sure more worried for this midterm than I was for the first one but at this point, I am just trying not to think about it and just relax.

I didn't do so good on the first midterm but I'm feeling better about this one so hopefully things go well! And don't worry, you still have the final to bring up your grade. As long as your pass that what matters!

It is definitely comforting to see that others are having similar grade worries; I did not perform as well as I had hoped on MT1, so I'm really hoping I did better on MT2 :/

Hi! I think that my advice would be to just not think about it too much, like the others have said there's a lot of ways that you can account for the missing points through things such as chemistry community, attending your discussion sections, and doing the sapling HW. I'm sure that you did better than you think !!

Don't let one test define you! Just study as hard as you can for the final and you will be okay. I did the textbook problems here and it really helped me.

I'm feeling alright about this midterm. To be honest, I'm surprised so many of you are saying that you found this midterm easier than the first midterm because, for me at least, there were multiple problems on which I was at least a little unsure about whereas on the first I was fairly confident on everything (But I still lost 8 points because I thought something said nm instead of mm grrr). There are still a lot of points out there so if you grind it out for these few remaining weeks you can definitely pass.

At least it's good to know that I'm not struggling alone. Also, like what was posted before, there are still plenty of points to earn. For this exam I definitely feel like I could've prepared better, but I can save that for preparation for the final exam at the very least.

I don't feel that great about the second midterm, to be honest. But please remember that it's just one grade and one class. Also, since we have quarter units, one class doesn't affect our GPA as much. For the final though, try doing the textbook problems and attending the step-up sessions as they really help.

even if there is not also remember that all future college programs know that you took college chem online during a pandemic and will always take that into consideration if you do not receive the grade you were hoping for.

I also felt that this midterm was much harder than the 1st, but I think that it'll help to really grind out over the topics you didn't understand from this section over the next couple weeks and hopefully do better on the final, since that takes up a good portion of our grades.

I too felt a little discouraged after this midterm but no matter how I did on it, I don't want it to affect our performance on the final. I know it's easier said than done but let's try to have a growth mindset! If we continue to work hard and trust ourselves, we'll see good results :)

I felt that this midterm was a bit harder because it was more conceptual and there was one question that I just didn't understand, so that was a bit discouraging. But in all, I'm sure we all did our best and hopefully everything will work out when scores are released :)

Midterm 1 rocked me--definitely--and I found midterm 2 tough too, but I felt more antiquated with the format of the test and therefore felt more comfortable. It's very sus though--that we can only miss a couple of questions to receive a good grade, since there are only a few questions.

I'm really happy to see this post, many people in the chemistry gc often talk about being sad about not getting an A. While I just am hoping for a passing grade I happy to see I am not alone. If this comforts you just know that we did our best and this is our first official university chemistry class and everyone is at a different level. I also have seen others reply that there are many points still to be received which is true. We still have the final which we can score more points. Done feel too bad. We are all in this together.

Hi! I would say no worries! Just try your best and work hard on the following final exam. Still, you have easy points to get like the chem community participation points and weekly homework points. Also, if you are really stressed out, maybe try to talk to your TA and they will probably give you useful advice.

I wouldn't want to worry about it too much. MT1 was really tough for me since it was my first ever college exam, and I didn't do as well as I had hoped. But, I let it go since there is nothing I can do about it now, and focused all of my energy on MT2, which I do feel better about. Hopefully this will help motivate you for the midterm!

I also felt like the second midterm was a bit more challenging, not necessarily because of harder concepts but because for me it is hard to think through the number of problems we had in 50 minutes especially not being able to mark up a paper and do the process of elimination by crossing things out. I also think that it has been hard for me to grasp multiple-choice tests for chemistry without partial credit. I wonder if it would be possible to do an extra credit assignment that allows us to get points for our work as well as answers.

I also felt the same way because I believe I'm better at solving rather than answering conceptual problems. I was also a bit worried that there were no partial points this time because nothing really involved solving. However, I don't think you need to worry too much as a 250/500(50%) is a passing grade! I think focusing on doing the sapling homework, posting consistently, and studying for the next big exam(final) will help you pass! You can do this. Stay motivated!

I did much worse than I thought, and honestly it feels like a gut punch considering how confident I felt after the exam. I know that I'll be able to pass the class, but in all honesty the amount that this class is going to kill my GPA isn't exactly exciting. Here's hoping we all ace this final, though!

I can relate! I thought I was more prepared for this midterm than the last one, but I got 20% lower :( Good luck to everyone on the final!

Does anybody know the grading scheme. If 50% is needed to pass how much do you need to get an A?

Hello! So there are a total of 500 points and to get an A you can only miss 5 points. Hope this helps!

I believe you can only miss 35 points in total to receive an A (93%) in the class!

I did slightly better on this midterm than the last. When I was looking at my grade for the second midterm though, I realized that the grade shown in the Grades tab on CCLE was the number of points out of 110 rather than the percentage, meaning I actually did worse on both midterms than I initially thought. I'm still not doing too bad, but that was definitely a bummer. :/

I ended up doing worse on this midterm but I guess I just gotta make up for it on the final :/. I'll take it as a learning curve. We all got this, just got to push through!!!

I 100% feel the same way, and am just trying to get as many possible points to try and pass. If it helps the community post and homework do a lot of work to help me pass. Also don't feel to bad if you have to re-take the class, it's a lot more normal in college than it is in high school.

Yea what a mood. I was hoping for a high B/low A in the class and after the second midterm that is not feeling probable. I'm glad at least we can get a passing grade with 50%.

Yeah I made so many simple errors taking the second midterm :/ It makes me feel a lot better knowing that we will have a passing grade as long as we have half of the total points for the quarter though! Good luck to everyone studying for finals!

Wish me luck guys, I'm planning on being at a session everyday this week. After this midterm, I am confident in myself but know that I made plenty of easy mistakes. I have faith in all of you!

I definitely agree that this class can be difficult at times, but thankfully we are under the tutelage of an amazing professor and assistant teaching staff. I know I performed horribly on the first midterm, but did better on the second. No one said this class was easy, but with the proper amount of study time and practice problems, I'm sure we'll make the mark for passing this class! As cheesy as it sounds, always try your best! One test does not define your entire grade! WE ALL GOT THIS!

All I can say is don't get discouraged, I didn't do so well with the first midterm but I worked hard and did better on the second. Also remember you only need 250/500 points to pass the class!

Hi! I also got a much, much lower score on this midterm compared to midterm 1. I recommend not overstressing, and instead focus on what you can do like studying for the final. A 50% is needed to pass, which is 250/500 points total for this class. Try to set a realistic goal for the final and keep pushing!

As someone who performed poorly on midterm 2 especially in comparison to midterm 1, I totally understand the concerns associated with a less than ideal midterm performance. However, speaking also as someone who has recovered from some fairly worrying preliminary grades in the past, know that it is still very much possible to do well in the course overall. Thankfully, most professors choose to weight grades more heavily towards later in the quarter so a good grade on the final exam could significantly boost your grade.

Everyone,

You must hear this:

"Oh, her/his/their eyes, her/his/their eyes
Make the stars look like they're not shinin'
Her/his/their hair, her/his/their hair
Falls perfectly without her/him/them trying
She's/He's/They're so beautiful and I tell her/him/them everyday
Yeah, I know, I know
When I compliment her/him/them she/he/they won't believe me
And it's so, it's so
Sad to think that she/he/they don't see what I see
But every time she/he/they asks me, "Do I look okay?"
I say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile
The whole world stops and stares for a while
'Cause girl/boy/them you're amazing
Just the way you are
Yeah
Her/his/their lips, her/his/their lips,
I could kiss them all day if she'd/he'd/they'd let me
Her/his/their laugh, her/his/their laugh
She/he/they hates but I think it's so sexy
She's/he's/they're so beautiful, and I tell her/him/them everyday
Oh, you know, you know
You know I'd never ask you to change
If perfect's what you're searching for then just stay the same
So don't even bother asking if you look okay
You know I'll say
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile
The whole world stops and stares for a while
'Cause, girl/boy/them, you're amazing
Just the way you are
The way you are
The way you are
Girl/boy/them, you're amazing
Just the way you are
When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
'Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile
The whole world stops and stares for a while
'Cause, girl/boy/them, you're amazing
Just the way you are
Yeah"

Don't worry! There's plenty of homework and chem community opportunities left as well as a final. Since we only need a 50% to pass, I'm sure you'll do fine and work hard on the final!

You are totally not alone. The second midterm definitely felt like a gut punch compared to how well I did on the first one, but just know it's just one test. My first quarter last year, I would get really stuck on and bummed out over not doing as well as I had hoped. Just know that it will all work out in the end. It is just one test in one class out of many in your academic career. Think of it as something to learn from and move forward. YOU GOT THIS!

I did much better on the second midterm than I did on the first and that could be because I changed my study habits slightly.
I found that explaining each step of solving a particular problem made sure I actually understood the concept.
Think about do practice problems like you're teaching someone how to do them. When you have to explain why you used a particular equation over another or what assumptions you have made to use that equation you'll be able to figure out what you struggle with and then you can go back to that lecture or read the textbook to clarify any concepts you didn't understand.

Midterm 2 was a bit more difficult for me compared to the first one we took. It does make me nervous thinking about my final grade as well, but it's important to not let past exams discourage us from putting in our best effort when it's time for finals!

I'm really worried because I did significantly worse on my second midterm compared to my first (and I was complaining about it)

I mean, I am able to pass but back then I was worried about not getting an A- but now I'm worried I might not get a B. I just feel so upset because I went over my midterm with my TA and saw how many silly mistakes I made (which if feel if there was partial credit, it could have been better, but there's nothing I can do). Im just going to study really hard the next week but I'm just... :(

I feel you! I'm super nervous for the final but I'm also trying to stay positive. We got this though!! I highly recommend attending as many UA Sessions and Review Sessions.

Honestly, I feel relieved but at the same time, the fact that I know I could've done better just still there and it kind of makes me feel :/ However, I am still overall pretty happy with how I'm doing overall. :) Hey, you got this! There's a lot of resources there to help out, but also remember to take care of yourself!
