Order of Ligands/naming
When writing the formula for a coordinate compound with more than one ligand, how do you know which one to put first in the brackets?

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
As previously mentioned, they are listed alphabetically excluding the prefix. For example 'pentaamine' comes before 'chloro' because you reference the a in amine and not the p in penta

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
As others have said, you write them in alphabetical order. And, you do not apply the prefixes when looking at the alphabetical order.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
You would name the ligands in alphabetical order, not including the prefixes, and then put the transition metal at the end, followed by whatever was not in the brackets.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
If there are multiple ligands, name them based on their alphabetical order.

As everyone else is saying, put the ligands in alphabetical order (excluding prefixes) and then add the transition metal at the end.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
What about when you're presented with the names+prefixes already and you have to find the opposite?
Like, does the order you write the ligands/formulas in the square brackets matter?

My TA said that it doesn't but I think you would just do it alphabetically.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
When writing the formula for a coordinate compound, you should always arrange the ligands by their name, without their prefix, in alphabetical order.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
Ligands are listed in alphabetical order by the first letter of the ligand (not the numerical prefix). Hope this helps!

The ligands are written in alphabetical order, but excluding the prefixes. Then, add the transition metal at the end. Hope this helps!

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
Hi, you would arrange the ligands in alphabetical order. Remember to ignore the prefixes while doing this and to focus only on the actual name of the ligand.

You would arrange the ligands in alphabetical order. When arranging the ligands in alphabetical order, you do not consider the prefix.

When writing the name you arrange them in alphabetical order (not including prefixes). When you are writing the formula my TA told us that it does not matter what order you put them in the brackets.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
If you're talking about the actual compound (as in, with the actual ions), I don't think it matters what order you put them in as long as you have the right ligands. Either way you write it, it should still be the same compound. Plus, the final is multiple choice so hopefully this won't be a problem.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
Hi! This is more in general for coordination compounds, but here's a resource that has been super helpful that is on Dr. Lavelle's website: https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/wp-conten ... pounds.pdf
Hope this helps!

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
You order based on the actual ligand name, not by prefix. Let's say we had tetraammine and dichloro. Dichloro would not go before tetraammine because ammine comes before chloro alphabetically.

Re: Order of Ligands/naming
it goes by alphabetical order, and literally by alphabetical order of the ions, so other examples were Co(NH3)3CL3, therefore since ammine is A and chlorine is C, it is first ammine triamminetrichlorocobalt(III)
