dobule arrows

Postby Kayko Lee 1C » Wed Jan 06, 2021 5:44 pm

I was doing the sample problems that Sapling works out and what does "<<" mean? For example, "make the approximation that x << 3.21 and 6.21, then solve the equilibrium expression for x."

I believe that they mean "is much larger than."

E.g. (i) 4<6 (ii) 4<<6*10^12

I agree that it most likely means much less than. For example going back to VSPER, trigonal pyramid has a bond angle x < 109.5, while bent (2BP,2LP) had a bond angle x << 109.5 since it usually had a smaller bond angle than molecules with the trigonal planar shape.

"<<" refers to how much smaller (or larger depending on what you're looking at) the number/variable is compared to the other number/variable.

Hi! I think the double arrow just highlights that value A is definitely smaller/larger than value B.

Hope it helps!
