Temperature in Ideal Gas Law

Postby Isis_DW_3G » Wed Jan 06, 2021 3:25 pm

Should we always use Celsius when plugging in temperature?
Thanks!

Hi! I'm pretty sure we have to use Kelvin for temperature

The gas constant R is expressed in J/Kelvin/mole so you have to use Kelvin when inputting the temperature of the gas so the units cancel.

Kelvin should be used so that the units are properly canceled out in the equation

The temperature will always be in Kelvin. Kelvin does not have any negative values so this eliminates any sign confusion.

For Ideal Gas Law, we should use Kelvin. Since pressure and volume can't be negative, the value plugged in for temperature must also never be negative so that the two sides of the equation can be equal. Because Kelvin can't go below zero, we use it as opposed to Fahrenheit or Celsius.

We actually use Kelvin for the temperature in Ideal Gas Equation.

we are supposed to always use Kelvin when plugging the temperature into the ideal gas law formula.

I think we need to convert to Kelvin for ideal gas law.

Use Kelvin! So if you're given Celsius add 273.15 to convert the temperature to Kelvin. This is to maintain consistent units with the gas constant, R, which has K as one of its units.
