Re: Advice for study
There are several things that I do to study, but I have found that reading the text is incredibly impactful for understanding the material. I love Lavelle's lectures and Sapling is helpful for practice, but reading the text and completing the assigned problems from the book helps me like nothing else.
Re: Advice for study
There are a ton of helpful options group engaging and individually, group wise there are PLF sessions, UA sessions, office hours, and workshops. Individually you can watch you tube videos or khan academy. As well as completing the assigned textbook problems, continuing to practice homework problems and try working on the material until it is understood 100%.

Re: Advice for study
Hi! What really helped me last quarter in Chem 14A was doing the textbook problems until I could do every problem correctly, attending UA sessions, and reviewing lecture notes carefully.

Re: Advice for study
For me personally I found attending UA Workshops to be much more beneficial than reading the textbook. In every workshop, you are exposed to handpicked difficult problems from previous exams, and the UAs have a good understanding of what exactly will be included on the midterms and finals.

Re: Advice for study
Hi!
My two must-do study techniques are doing all of the practice problems that Dr. Lavelle assigned and going to UA Workshops. Like, I cannot emphasize how good the UA Workshops are. They give you difficult problems similar to ones that have shown up on past exams so you're practically ready for anything. Dr. Lavelle says that a lot of the test questions are similar to the practice problems in the textbook, so it never hurts to do the homework.
Good luck!

Re: Advice for study
Definitely do the practice problems from the textbook, especially on your own completely as a trial run, and then look through the answer key provided to see what are your common mistakes. Skim through the textbook too, as there are a few key concepts and vocab not always mentioned in lecture. Review the practice problems close to the midterms too!
Re: Advice for study
Hi! I would definitely attend some UA sessions if you can. I find the worksheets they give really helpful. I would also suggest doing textbook problems as we go through each unit, as it gives you good practice.

Re: Advice for study
For me, I usually go through all the assigned textbook problems and try to go to around 2-3 UA sessions each week.
Usually, the UA's have some past midterm and final on their worksheets so those are good practice for the actual exams.

Re: Advice for study
a lot of the test questions come directly from the textbook problems, so I definitely recommend focusing on those as practice.

Re: Advice for study
My strategy is that after watching the posted lecture, I attempt to do as many homework problems that I can (or have time for haha). I use the solution manual to check my answers and if they don't line up I spend extra time searching for what I did wrong in order to learn from my mistakes! I also suggest the workshops, I am new to Dr. Lavelle's class and I have only been to one workshop so far but it helped me identify what topics I needed to study more!

Re: Advice for study
The workshop sessions are so helpful, they definitely helped my grade a ton in chem 14A. I would highly reccomend going to those whenever you can and also just searching concepts on youtube if you don't get them.

Re: Advice for study
I really like to make notes on the margins of HW questions I got wrong to make sure I understand why I got it wrong and to not repeat the same mistake again. Doing it in a different color really helps. Before tests, I'll go back and review the notes I made. Hope that's helpful!

Re: Advice for study
Last quarter I attended all the lectures and took notes. I also would continually look back at those notes as I was doing textbook problems. Attending UA workshops also helped me a lot. I would recommend redoing all the assigned textbook problems the week of the midterm as a refresher.

Re: Advice for study
Study stuff you are struggling with first! Prioritize harder concepts. In order to truly check mastery, do tons of textbook problems. Once you can do a handful all right on your own, you can be pretty confident that you have the concept down.

Re: Advice for study
I recommend you do the textbook problems because they are good extra practice. Also, I don't think you need to read the textbook but you should look at the textbook if you are confused about a specific topic because the textbook gives detailed explanations and examples.

Re: Advice for study
I love taking handwritten notes and making study sheets before the midterms/final to narrow it down to the hardest topics.

Practicing with the textbook problems and going to the zoom resources are good places to start.

Re: Advice for study
Hey! What has really helped me a lot is watching Lavelle's lecture and rewriting the notes in my own format so that I processed it when I watched lecture and then reaffirmed the information in my brain through my notes after watching. It also helps a lot to go over your notes at the end of each week and go over any areas that you are iffy on by reading the textbook! Good luck! :)

Re: Advice for study
I have a lot of friends that took this class before me, and they all said the most helpful thing to do was study with other students in this class. I know its hard when we're all online, but I would suggest trying to connect with someone in your discussion!

try not procrastinate and find ways to learn the formulas. Maybe quizlets or even rewatching the lecture

Hi! I have a lot of notes, but not sure if the structure of the exam will be more practical problems or conceptual

Re: Advice for study
I highly recommend attending the various review sessions (UA, review, etc) and also working on the textbook problems as those were the most similar to the questions we had on the exams in 14A.
Re: Advice for study
I find completing all of the textbook problems to be the most helpful for me. Attending UA sessions are also really nice, especially if you have questions/confusion.

Re: Advice for study
I have been setting aside about 2 hours every day in order to study for chem, I feel like that is the best approach so you don't have to cram as much before the midterm or final. Reading the textbook really helps too.

Re: Advice for study
take some time to set aside and review notes. work out as many chem problems as you can throughout the week. even if it's for 2-3 hrs a day.
