Midterms During Lecture

I recently saw on Chemistry Community that midterms are being held during lecture this quarter. Is this true? If so, where did this info come from? Thanks a lot, I appreciate it :).

The "Exam schedule" page on his website says that the tests are taken during class, whereas his 14A website said that it was to be taken during discussion.

Yes, I believe we're using the same set-up, so Respondus on your laptop and then joining the Zoom call with your TA from another device.

Midterms are 50 minutes long each, and the final takes 90 minutes! It is also in the syllabus :)

Yes, on the syllabus it states that this quarter midterms will be given during the lecture times rather than during your discussion periods.

Yes, I believe that we are supposed to join our TA's zoom call during lecture to take our exam using the same set-up as last quarter (laptop with respondus, phone/external webcam joining zoom to show your workspace, etc).

Yes, exams are being held during lecture this quarter - this includes both midterm and final exams. This information comes from both the Syllabus and the Exam Schedule. The midterms are 50 minutes and the final is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

On the topic of exams and midterms, has anyone heard anything about the format? Is it still going to be similar to a few questions worth a lot of points each? I know the syllabus had different percentages going towards tests now out of the class total, so I am curious.

Yes, on Dr. Lavelle's website, the "Exam Schedule" page shows that the exam will take place during class time, as opposed to discussion section.

Whether we will take the midterm in a large lecture zoom call or a discussion zoom call, I think it will work like our final in 14A where our TA invites all of their students into one zoom call and are split into two groups where 2 proctors look over one of the groups respectively.

You may be able to contact your TA/the professor to see if you can sign up for an alternate time slot. Otherwise, you might want to try and see if your other class will let you miss class (should only happen twice so hopefully they are understanding, but idk which class you're in). Good luck!

He posted it under "Exam Schedule" on his website. I think he made the change because last quarter the discussion midterm timings were unfair to those who had Monday discussions versus those who had discussions later in the week like Friday. This gives everyone a more equal opportunity.
