Calculator for exams
Does anyone know what the calculator policy for this class is? I've been using a graphing calculator and would like to know if they'll be allowed for the exams (midterms and finals).

Re: Calculator for exams
Hi,
Last quarter all calculators were allowed (well, regular ones including scientific and graphic calculators like TI-84) so I would assume the same policy will be in place.
I also am curious though if we are allowed to use a Quadratic Formula program on our calculators to solve equilibrium expression questions- that's what I've been using for the homework and it definitely saves a lot of time and mistakes, however in class Professor Lavelle told us to use the equation so I'm not sure if he would only like us to do it the manual way.

I remember last quarter my TA mentioned how it would be too difficult to check everyone's calculators for stored values or programs since everything is virtual, but you do make a good point. The program is honestly a life saver for those quadratic equations that get really messy. Maybe they'll give us questions that shouldn't be too difficult/too messy to solve?

Re: Calculator for exams
Since everyone has the required calculator which would have that program on it, I would say it is fine but that's a good question for Lavelle!

Re: Calculator for exams
I used a graphing calculator for all my exams in Chem 14A and had no issues. Just as long as you aren't using some wacky programs on your calculator or cheating in any way, you will be fine.

Yup like what everyone else said above, I believe both graphic and scientific are allowed. I normally use my scientific but in 14A one time I couldn't find it, so I used my graphing instead and my TA was fine with it.

Re: Calculator for exams
I think all calculators should be fine! For the quadratic calculator function, I think we will probably have to show some working- maybe just inserting numbers into the formula?

They weren't very strict on calculators last quarter, so I'm assuming that they'll have similar policies this quarter until we're told differently.

Last quarter, my TA said we were fine using any calculator, so I'm assuming it's the same this quarter.

Re: Calculator for exams
I used a graphing calculator last quarter, but my TA recently mentioned something about only being able to use scientific calculators... so I'm not quite sure. I also think it may depend on your TA.

I think we were allowed to use any calculator last quarter. However, most TA's prefer that you use a scientific calculator if you have one.

Re: Calculator for exams
Last quarter I used a graphing calculator and it was no problem. If this was like an actual in person midterm, then they usually make your clear the memory on your calculator and show it to the TA who is proctoring, but that would take up too much time when doing it online. But yeah, any calculator was technically allowed as long as you weren't being sneaky and trying to cheat.

In 14A, my TA said that any calculator was fine and didn't bother checking any of our calculators before the exam.

Last quarter we were allowed to use any calculator and I haven't heard that that has changed.

I'm pretty sure we're technically only supposed to be using scientific calculators however any calculator was allowed during last quarter and I'd assume that policy will remain the same.

Yeah that's what I remember too, my TA really wanted us to use scientific calculators and if you didn't have one then you could use a graphing calculator

Re: Calculator for exams
I think that either a scientific or graphing calculator was allowed, but the scientific was preferred, though the TA's did not specifically check calculators before exams.

Re: Calculator for exams
I asked last quarter and my TA said that any calculator is fine, I used a T-84 Plus CE. I used it all of last quarter and so far this quarter too!

Re: Calculator for exams
I used a TI-84 graphing calculator last quarter with Lavelle, so I don't think it really matters what calculator you use.

I've been using the TI-84 Plus CE claculator and it's been okay to use so far. I honestly think any calculator along those lines should work.

Re: Calculator for exams
Since procturing is already hard enough for the TAs they're allowing all calculators for the exams

I believe the professor said any graphing or scientific calculator is allowed.
