Hi,

What grade in this class constitutes an A versus an A-?

I'm pretty sure its the same as the standard grading scale at UCLA, where >93 is an A, and a number inbetween 93 and 90 is an A-.

I think Dr. Lavelle hasn't determined the grading scale yet? Only that like a 250/500 is like a C- or C+ for now, but I'm not entirely sure.

I'm kind of confused about the grading scale too. i know he said a 50% is a C- but is an A- still 90%?

not entirely sure but I think only the C- grade (50%) is curved and the rest follows the standard grading, so a C would be 73%, an A- would be 92%, and an A would be 93%

like others have already mentioned a grading scale hasn't really been set for this class beyond a C- = 50%.
i would like to assume that Dr. Lavelle is waiting until after the final to curve the rest of the grades based on what our class distribution is. something to remember with this is that grades being curved should never hurt what you are already expected to have in the class - it should only help improve your grade if ever.

If you're talking about the grade cutoffs for the class in general, it should be the standard scale. If you're talking about potential curving, I honestly have no idea what he's going to do but I wouldn't be too worried about it.

I think the only difference with his grading scale is that a C- begins at 50% and the rest remains the same. So an A- would be 90%-92% and an A would be 93%-96% but I could be wrong.

Yeah I think the 50% is just for passing but the rest of the scales for A/A- still apply

I believe anything greater than a 93 or maybe a 94 will classify the A as an A+

I think it will depend on what the average distribution is but the above comments are generally right. 93 ish will be a pretty standard A while what is considered as passing will vary.

I believe it is the same as last quarter: A is 93-96% while A- is 90-92%. However, the scores for midterms and finals may be reevaluated based on the class avaerage like the final last quarter for chem14b

My understanding is that the general grading scale isn't set yet, and will be decided closer to the end of the quarter depending on how we all do on tests/homework assignments.

Typically for UCLA 93 or above is an A and anything below a 93 would be an A-. I think that is what Lavelle follows as well.

I agree with everyone else that a 93 is the cutoff for an A. In terms of our point system, I believe that means you can miss ~28 points total just fyi (assuming no rounding).

I think a 93% or higher constitutes an A. But last quarter Dr. Lavelle gave all of us 10 bonus points and also rounded a lot of our grades.

From 90-93 is an A-, above 93 is an A. Most professors have the grading scale in their syllabus or on their websites.

For chemistry, a 93 and above is an A while a 97 and above is an A+ (same effect on GPA). A- is 90-92 and is no longer a 4.0 in GPA calculation.

Im pretty sure 50-72% is C-, then after that everything is normal with 73-76% is a C, 77-79% is a C+, etc.
