tertiary alcohol

tertiary alcohol

Can someone please explain why this is a tertiary alcohol.

You know this is tertiary because the main chain has only 3 carbons on it when you can only use neo for 5 or more carbons attached to the main chain. It is an alcohol because it has OH attached to it, therefore making this a tertiary alcohol.

Whether it is primary, secondary or tertiary,

First- find the OH,
Second- look at the carbon that OH is attached to
Third- Count how many Carbons are attached to that carbon.

In your picture OH is attached to a carbon that is bonded to 3 other carbons so, it is tertiary.
