Gauche and Anti

Postby WilliamTomita2G » Sun Mar 06, 2016 4:04 pm

Is "gauche" a term which specifically refers to a 60 degree dihedral angle, or does it refer to a local minimum of potential energy? Is "anti" a term which specifically refers to a 180 degree dihedral angle, or does it refer to a global minimum? Thanks

I was confused as well and so I looked it up and found out that Gauche is any dihedral angle that is more than 0 degrees but less that 120 degrees and so based on this explanation, I would infer that anti- refers to any dihedral angle that is more than 120 degrees but less than 240 degrees. This explanation is to the best of my ability, so I would reconfirm it with any of the TAs, UAs, or Dr. Lavelle.
