Fall 2014 Midterm Question 2B

In this question, it asks to draw the lewis structure for aluminum chloride and name its shape. Then, it asks if the aluminum atom is a lewis acid or lewis base. Why is the aluminum atom a lewis acid? Is it because aluminum is a cation? Therefore, the aluminum atom is positive in charge and is attracted to electrons. This causes the atom to accept electrons, which makes it a lewis acid. Is my reasoning correct?

Yes. A lewis acid is an electron acceptor and a lewis base is an electron donor.

Yes, you're right. When you draw the Lewis structure, the aluminum is the center atom and accepts electrons from the chloride, which is why it is a Lewis acid.
