4.61 Homework Question

Give the valence-shell electron configurations and bond orders for CO and CO+. Which has a stronger bond?

CO:(sigma 2s)^2 (sigma 2s*)^2 (pi 2p)^4 (sigma 2p)^22. Bond order=3
CO+: (sigma 2s)^2 (sigma 2s*)^2 (pi 2p)^4 (sigma 2p)^11. Bond order=2.5
Because CO has a higher bond order, it has a stronger bond.

Why is (sigma 2p) raised to 22 instead of 2? I made the MO diagram and got 2 for CO and 1 for CO+ in the sigma 2p.

There is a typo in the textbook answer! 22 should be 2 and 11 should be just 1 so don't worry you are doing it correctly.

CO: (sigma2s)^2(sigma*2s)^2(pi2p)^4(sigma2p)^2
CO+: (sigma2s)^2(sigma*2s)^2(pi2p)^4(sigma2p)^1

Remember it is in this order because for hetronuclear with z mixed, you use the MO set up for z<8 which is with the sigma in a higher energy level than pi-bonds.

Also, remember when you draw this out to put the O atom at lower energy levels because it is more electronegative than C.
