Valence electron configuration

Postby Elisse Albian 3D » Sun Nov 13, 2016 12:59 pm

Can we write the abbreviated configuration (writing (π2p)^4 vs. (π2px)^2(π2py)^2), or should we write the fully expanded version?

You write (π2p)^4 because in molecular orbital diagrams you can't determine which p orbitals are x, y, and z due to the different ways molecular orbitals interact during bonding. The expanded version is used for valence electron configurations of a single atom. When writing the valence electron configuration for a molecule, you don't use the expanded version.
